Hog Heaven: In spite of everything, still mellow about the Redskins

Eric Wahlund

The 3-5 Redskins are sitting right where we expected them to be at the mid-point of the season. We are mellow about the Redskins.

They are trending six or seven wins as was widely expected of them. Hog Heaven ignores the Chicken Littles that projected a two-win season.

We also ignored optimistic Facebook fans online who hoped for an upset of the Patriots. But hey, if Steve Spurrier and Patrick Ramsey can beat Belichick and Brady (2003), why not Gruden and Cousins?

The Redskins own a 6-4 series lead over the Patriots, but have lost the last three, including that 52-7 beat down of Joe Gibbs’ ’07 ‘Skins team that featured a far better defense starring Sean Taylor and London Fletcher.

The Pats were a measuring stick showing how far we have to go.

Beating the Pats was never essential to success.

Winning the season.

Win at home – win five or six home games. We are 3-1 at home. We can do this.

Split with two division rivals – We are 1-1 after games with the Eagles and Giants. The Redskins split with the Eagles and Cowboys last year. We can do this, although winning seven games implies we beat a rival at their stadium.

Beat teams we are supposed to beat – We blew the Dolphins game and then we beat the Buccaneers. There are no soft touches left. The Bears are struggling, but might still be the better team. The Saints allow a lot of points, but…Drew Brees. Tony Romo may not be sharp when he returns for the Cowboys.

Steal one of those games and seven or even eight wins are possible.

If Gruden pulls that off, he will get another year to perfect his program.

Don’t hate. Gruden does not excite us, either. We are fans, though. We root for whoever is out there.

And we do not want Daniel Snyder to make, influence or approve another football decision. Anything, even Gruden, is a better choice than that.

Hail, Redskins!

Did you catch this?

  • Roy Helu, Jr. has disappeared from the Raiders offense. David Amerson has defended eight passes and snagged one INT in six games for the Raiders.
  • Brian Orakpo has five sacks for the Titans.
  • Is Perry Riley done? A story on cbslocal.com says he might be.
  • I hate kickers. It is so hard to keep track of them. The Redskins signed Dustin Hopkins when the Saints released him and kept rookie Zack Hocker who they subsequently released and replaced with Kai Forbath after the Redskins released him. What were the Saints thinking? Hopkins has been near perfect for the ‘Skins, especially on kick-offs. Everybody liked Forbath except for his notable lack of touchbacks. The ‘Skins might have an advantage in starting field position when the Saints come marching in.
