Holes in the secondary

Colts are scrambling

Starter Aaron Francisco was summoned from his Phoenix home Oct. 5. Rookie Mike Newton was cut at the end of training camp, joined the practice squad, then eventually signed to the active roster the same day as Francisco. Second-year pro Chip Vaughn signed Oct. 25, was waived for a weekend earlier this month, re-signed, then Tuesday was put on season-ending injured reserve.

Vaughn was hurt at New England on Sunday while playing special teams. The Colts signed free agent defensive back Al Afalava, a sixth-round draft pick in 2009 by the Chicago Bears out of Oregon State.

The Colts (6-4), who host AFC rival San Diego (5-5) on Sunday, had to adjust to injuries at the position from the get-go. Special teams ace Jamie Silva was lost for the season in a preseason game. Bob Sanders was injured in the opener, his timetable for return still an unknown. Melvin Bullitt was placed on injured reserve after the fourth game.
