The Houston Texans quarterback competition is over after head coach Bill O’Brien named Brian Hoyer the starter for Week 1.
“We all need to give Brian Hoyer a chance. I believe in him. I believe in his ability to run our offense efficiently.”
There’s no question that Hoyer always had the upper hand over Ryan Mallet, and now, he gets a chance to start over in Houston one year after leaving Cleveland.
Hoyer has played well in the times he’s gotten to play, and most of it in Cleveland was without the benefit of their No. 1 wide receiver, Josh Gordon. In Houston, Hoyer gets a budding superstar in third year wide out- DeAndre Hopkins, who presumably takes over the No. 1 spot after the departure of Andre Johnson.
As in Cleveland however, Hoyer begins with a bit of a handicap, losing running back Arian Foster for at minimum, half the season, thanks to groin surgery. Alfred Blue is expected to take over as the starting RB, much like he did last season with Foster battling injuries.
Hoyer is in a good spot, and he’s got a head coach who has been an offensive assistant, WR coach, QB coach and offensive coordinator for the New England Patriots and Tom Brady from 2007-2011, so he’s well versed in running an offense.
Bottom line is this: Brian Hoyer is in a better situation with Houston right now than he ever was in Cleveland, and Houston for now, has landed a very solid starting QB. They already sport one of the toughest defenses in football, and now with Hoyer at QB, they might finally have the stability needed to make a run at the playoffs in 2015.
Things are looking up in H-Town these days.
