Houston-Rice to Resume Rivalry in 2017

City rivals Houston and Rice will fight again on the gridiron for Space City bragging rights in 2017 and 2018, following the completion of a three-year hiatus on the once-annual rivalry game.

The Houston rivals haven’t played since a 31-26 Cougar victory in 2013 when both schools played in Conference USA’s West Division. Before the rivalry ended on an annual basis after Houston joined the American Athletic Conference in 2014, the Cougars and Owls played 15 straight seasons from 1999-2013.

Kudos to Houston and Rice administrators for returning this inner city rivalry to the football field when so many programs (*cough* Texas and Texas A&M *cough*) have let hard feelings and pride from conference realignment get in the way of what’s truly important: the integrity of the game.

Rivalries provide fuel for college football, especially the rivalries involving teams in close proximity. Can’t get any closer than being located in the same city. No matter how Houston or Rice look as teams in 2017, the battle for the “Bayou Bucket” will be a good one.
