When you think of Nike, there are certain images and people that come to mind: Phil Knight, Michael Jordan, the “Swoosh”.

The names Carolyn Davidson and Portland State University usually don’t fall anywhere remotely close to that list. But they should.

As a proud PSU alum and one to draw inspiration from those who have creatively gone before me, Davidson’s story is both inspiring and a lesson in “you just never know”, for those grinding away in college or freelancing.

It was 1971. She was a student at Portland State simply filling an empty elective by taking a design course and eventually take on some freelance design work billed at $35 a week.

Davidson recently shared her “amazing” story with her alma mater.
