As the 8th and final team was determined Monday evening (congrats Rockies), I thought I’d take a look to see how the Brewers did this year against the crème de la crème of the National League:
vs. Phillies: 3-4 (2-1 at home, 1-3 on the road)
vs. Cubs: 6-9 (2-4 at home, 4-5 on the road)
vs. Diamondbacks: 5-2 (3-1 at home, 2-1 on the road)
vs. Rockies 2-4 (2-1 at home, 0-3 on the road)
Total: 16-19, .457
Some thoughts–The Brewers only had a winning record against one of the four playoff teams–the Diamondbacks, the team that the NL Central champs, Chicago, is playing in the first round. But a 7-12, .368, record on the road would indicate that the Crew may have had trouble taking a series, especially since they would have been the #3 seed and played the first two games on the road. Most disturbing is that 2-4 home record against the Cubs…had two of those games gone the other way, resulting in two more wins for the Brewers and two fewer for the Cubs, the Brewers would have forced a playoff for the division title.
As I’m on the topic, I’ll quickly make my predictions for the playoffs, based on hunches and gut instincts:
- Diamondbacks over Cubs in 4
- Phillies over Rockies in 4
- Indians over Yankees in 5
- Red Sox over Angels in 4
Then:
- Phillies over Diamondbacks in 5…Phils are on a roll and D-backs pitching is just not strong enough
- Red Sox over Indians in 7…could be one of the best series ever
Finally:
- Phillies over Red Sox in 7…if the Phillies can manage their pitchers well
