How Gaborik Should & Shouldn’t Approach the Shootout

I have said it time and time again on this blog, if Marian Gaborik uses his lightning quick release on every shootout/penalty shot/breakaway he will never be stopped. And last night against Phoenix was the perfect example.

Here’s Gaborik getting stopped in overtime by Mike Smith when he deked on his penalty shot….

…ok, that was a ridiculous save by Smith, but still no goal.

And here’s Gaborik extending the shootout when he decides to just rifle it home (2:20 mark)…

Gaborik on his mindset going into the shootout after being stopped on the penalty shot (via Blueshirts United)…

“I just tried to refocus and tried to forget about that first one because it was bothering me obviously, it was frustrating,” explained Gaborik. “After I didn’t score i just tried to refocus and it was a big shot because it was a chance to keep us in the game. So I just focused on that, and I am glad it worked out.”
