Steve Bulpett has the details. Here is just a taste.
A shirtless Glen “Big Baby” Davis and his “best friend” Shawn Bridgewater
– a former teammate of the Celtics forward on the University High
basketball team in Baton Rouge, La. – emerged bleeding from their noses
after a fight inside a black SUV in Waltham Sunday morning, the Herald
has learned.
The incident apparently fractured
Davis’ right thumb just two days before tonight’s season opener against
the Cleveland Cavaliers. Davis could be lost for an extended period of
time.
According to the police report obtained
by the Herald, Davis claimed his allegedly drunken childhood pal was
“continually bothering his girlfriend,” Jenna Gomez.
After reading the story, I'm on Big Baby's side. He had a friend in his car who was drunk and belligerent. Davis wasn't drunk, neither was his girlfriend. If this jerk of a "friend" gets out of hand… then that's not his fault.
If these are the actual facts, then he should not be suspended.
UPDATE
“I was defending myself,” Davis said in a phone interview with Yahoo!
Sports. “I wasn’t just fighting. I feel like I let my team down by
breaking my hand. I let my team down trying to defend myself. I have to
make better decisions on how I choose my friends.”
UPDATE 2
Statement from the Celtics
BOSTON – The Boston Celtics announced today that forward Glen Davis underwent successful surgery to reduce and fix a right thumb fracture. The surgery was performed by Celtics Team Physician, Dr. Brian McKeon and was assisted by Dr. Hervey Kimball and Dr. Drew Terrono at New England Baptist Hospital . Davis is expected to miss the next six weeks.
"I would first like to apologize to my fans, teammates, coaches and the entire Celtics organization. I am extremely disappointed that this incident occurred and that it will prevent me from starting the season with the rest of my teammates. My teammates and the entire Celtics organization are extremely important to me and I will do my best to expedite the healing process and be back on the court as soon as possible," said Davis .
