Anyone that saw the Pirates/Nationals game last night looked at the crowd and probably said to themselves, “I bet I could count the number of people in the stands.” Sam Miller at the OC Register actually did just that with the Nationals’ TV broadcast and came up with approxmately 1,100. Even as an embarrassed Pirate fan, I have to admit that that’s pretty awesome. Miller also points out all of the mitigating circumstances that lead to the tiny crowd (really lousy April weather, the Penguins game, the Nationals, and the fact that the game was a makeup), which I appreciate even if I think most people will ignore that part and go HAHA THE PIRATES HAVE NO FANS THEY SUCK.
I understand how hard it can be to sit through a Pittsburgh April for a Pirate game (I’ve sat through some really, really cold afternoons and nights at PNC where there weren’t many people in the park other than me), but I really hope there’s a day in the near future where the Pirates aren’t the punchline to this kind of joke anymore.
Also, brace yourselves for Wednesday. That regularly scheduled baseball game featuring Tim Lincecum (Actually the Giants’ starter is TBA and apparently it might be Ryan Vogelsong. Like that’s gonna help attendance.) and the defending World Champion Giants will be going up against the Pens Game 7 in Pittsburgh. And unless the weather is really awesome, the stands are going to be awfully empty that night, too, and it’s going to be harder to explain that one away.
