Michael Vick spoke his wistful thought that a place on the Redskins roster would be the ideal end to his career.
It could work.
The social media reaction was a unanimous “oh HECK no.”
Somebody out there (you know who you are) thinks this would be a great idea, but the notion is a non-starter the most.
The story legs only because Vick invoked the Redskins name. Daniel Snyder has a penchant for signing well-known players whose careers are done.
We hope those days have ended, but then we see Ryan Clark on the roster. Lets give Clark a free pass because he is a Redskins alumnus who roamed the defensive backfield with Sean Taylor. What a time! Besides, the Redskins had few other options given their cap room.
There is no sign that the ‘Skins take Vick’s hint seriously.
Hog Heaven is an analytic, however. After getting over that initial ick feeling, it is our nature to ask if there is any way adding Vick could be feasible.
GMs should not be knee-jerk dismissive. They too should play out every scenario.
We can think of one way where this might make sense – If Washington sheds Colt McCoy or Kirk Cousins in 2015. Then there may be a place for a veteran as the No. 3 QB on the roster. MV7 could be that guy. The Redskins have never defeated Michael Vick when he has played a complete game.
After that, every signal flashes thumbs down.
We learned the hard way that Washington’s No. 3 QB will see playing time. That’s where the ick comes with Vick.
Michael Vick is clearly at the end of his career, like Donovan McNabb in 2010. Vick’s good year in Philly made McNabb expendable, but Donovan was always a better passer.
Vick could not displace struggling Geno Smith as Jets starter.
His career pass completion rate is under 60 percent. His 2014 passer rating is 68.3.
Every Redskins passer except Pierre Garcon, PIERRE GARCON, has higher stats than that.
The Jets are as big a mess as the Redskins are. Vick did not help Geno Smith through that morass. Nor did he save Rex Ryan’s job. Ryan may be Washington’s next DC. (Two predictions for the price of one.)
Robert Griffin III made plain that he compares himself to the “Peytons and the Rodgers.” He declines to be compared to Michael Vick.
The drama of RGIII and MV7 on the same roster would be must see TV.
The Redskins are not into any sort of drama. They just want to win football games.
We know this because they keep telling us so.
Michael Vick on the Redskins roster is an unlikely scenario. Colt McCoy is at the end of his contract. Kirk Cousins is in Jay Gruden’s doghouse. One of them will be the odd man out in 2015. Pay attention to that.
