How should the Blues respond to a blowout loss?

The Blues were crushed by the Columbus Blue Jackets on Friday night. Crushed might be putting things nicely. The Blue Jackets scored seven times in their dominant effort against the Blues, ending the team’s 13-game point streak. Brian Elliott was chased after allowing four goals and Jake Allen allowed three in relief.

So, what do you do after a blowout loss? What’s the best way to move forward?

Every situation is different, but in this case the Blues would be best served forgetting it ever happened. Now, some may say you need to learn from your mistakes in a blowout loss and apply those lessons moving forward, but some blowouts should be treated like a blip on the radar. It’s all about context. There were some signs that the Blues would be exposed sooner than later, but for the most part the team has been playing a solid game.

The Blues recorded points in 13 straight games. Some of those wins came with several key players out with injuries. Considering all of the luck the Blues enjoyed during the streak, it’s really no wonder it all ran out at once. The loss was ugly, but keep in mind that it’s only one loss. The Blues now have points in 13 of their last 14. That’s not too shabby. Perspective is key after a blowout loss. The Blues were due for a beating and you should expect a few over an 82-game schedule. Things tend to average out and we saw that in a big way against Columbus.

Sunday’s game against the Chicago Blackhawks will be a good indication of just how fluky the Columbus loss was. The Blues might end up losing to the Blackhawks, but if it’s a grueling, physical game in which the Blues put forth a solid effort, then we can probably all write off the 7-1 defeat.
