How WaPOST’s Mike Jones ruined my Redskins day tweeting Greg Hardy news

Day 4, Training Camp at Centennial Sportsplex

Yesterday, Hog Heaven had this great idea for a blog post about the Redskins and why Greg Hardy had no place on the team.

Then Mike Jones blew that idea out of the water.

Poof! Story idea gone.

We were going to say something about Hardy’s character. He’s a bad actor. If the Cowboys can’t stand to have him on their roster, nobody can.

We wanted to point out that Jerry Jones’ football strategy is to claim mean-minded players the way Al Davis did in the Raiders’ glory days. It has risks, but can pay off big. By the 1980s, the Raiders were the most feared team on the planet.

If an enormous talent like Hardy is tossed off Dallas’ roster, it’s warning enough for the Redskins.

The story would have been a platform to slam social media lynch mobs. As bad as the story was about Hardy’s (alleged) assault, and it was really bad, we have a problem when people prefer the NFL to criminal Courts. Sports leagues are not equipped to be moral arbiters.

We’ll save that idea for another time.

Finally, there is the part about renting veterans and stifling development of young players. Former Hog Heaven contributor Greg Trippiedi taught me about that.

Players develop only when they play. We think young players need the experience of 36 live games to round into pros.

It’s fine to bring in an aging Vernon Davis to school young tight ends on how to act like professionals, but Davis will not steal time from Jordan Reed. Hardy would have stolen time from LB Preston Smith.

In today’s world, teams must win with a core of well chosen players performing under their first NFL contract. It’s what we think GM Scot McCloughan is trying to do.

It’s all moot since the Redskins are not considering Hardy. Just forget you read this here.
