Many WWE fans believe that current Universal champion Brock Lesnar is heading back to the UFC. That has been the prevailing opinion in the months following Lesnar’s confrontation with UFC champion Daniel Cormier in the Octagon. But even though all signs seemed to have pointed to Lesnar versus Cormier, nothing official has been announced.
However that may change sooner rather than later. MMA Junkie is reporting that The Beast Incarnate is not out of the UFC title picture. UFC President Dana White spoke in a press conference after the company’s 232 event on December 29 and addressed the Lesnar situation.
[lawrence-related id=867108]“No, (Lesnar is) not out of the picture. Absolutely (he could still fight Cormier). I think he’s already under contract with me. We were talking about it, and then he ended up signing a new deal with WWE.”
This may come as something of a surprise to Brock’s critics, who felt that he had been using the UFC as a means of leverage against WWE. But how much leverage does he really have, considering he’s already re-signed with Vince McMahon?
But White evidently feels Brock is definitely using the situation to his advantage.
“He’s in a very unique position because he can play this thing between UFC and WWE. And they get right down to the wire, and I think Vince (McMahon) throws so much money at him that he says, ‘All right, I’ll do (WWE) again.’ Because this is here no matter what. When he’s ready, he can come in here and fight and he’s gonna make a (expletive) ton of money here, too. So it makes sense. I’m assuming that’s what’s going on.”
Lesnar is currently booked to defend his Universal Championship against Braun Strowman at the Royal Rumble on Sunday, January 27. Many pro wrestling analysts believe that Lesnar will drop the title that night, opening the door for his eventual return to the UFC.
