“Huddy spent all day on one of these Monday”
Happy New Year Cougs and as always, Happy Hump Day! I’m sorry the post is a little late coming to you this morning. In my defense, I was too busy last night making dinner, watching tv and playing video games. Then I would have taken the time this morning, but “True Life: I Used to be Amish” was on MTV. As with all episodes of True Life, it was fairly riveting. Also, my representation has been in discussion with the people at Bridgeport Brewing. I was hoping to have some sort of announcement for today’s post, but it’s still a work in progress so stay tuned. Big thanks to my representation though. You all may remember him as My Buddy Korey The Husky. Aside from hiring Justin Wilcox, I guess Huskies have done two good things this week. I’m guessing they’re pretty tapped out.
Before I get into the meat and potatoes of today’s post, a couple of quick college hoops notes. I have to admit that in spite of my prediction in this space last week I was fairly surprised that Ken Bone’s troops were able to pull off the split against the Oregon schools. Once they lost to the Ducks and looked absolutely horrific in the process, I thought for sure the Beavs would finish the sweep. Much to my surprise Brock Motum and the boys bounced back with a strong performance against what I still think is a quality team. On a personal note, Saturday was a big day for my budding man crush on Davonte Lacy. As long as he’s not ball handling in pressure situations, dude looks like the real deal to me. My prediction for this week’s games against Utah and Colorado? A split. If you follow Sutra on Twitter, you now know that he’s referring to splits as a Huddy so I’ve got to roll with it.
Elsewhere in the slightly Cougar related college basketball stratosphere, I came across this article this morning. Then I gave my monitor the finger.
Now that all that’s out of the way, let’s get on with the rest of the show before I go accept my award for Best Non-Sensical Blog Post Intro of 2012 (so far). If you’re like me and didn’t have to work on Monday, you probably had the good fortune of enjoying the Greatest Television Sports Day in the History of History. Even though I’m the site’s Senior Recent History Analyst, I can’t back this up with facts, but it sure felt like it at the time so I wanted to relive the day that was. First you gotta jump, jive and then you wail…
Typically New Year’s Day is a sports day on the calendar worth looking forward to, but due to every other major sports’ deference to the NFL, all other games avoided Sunday like the plague and left Monday jam-packed with big time events from start to finish. I was looking forward to the Rose and Fiesta Bowls of course, but didn’t expect the rest of the day to be quite so entertaining. I also didn’t expect it to start so early. Here’s an outline of how my day played out. I hope you enjoy The Huddy Experience:
Fulham: 2 – Arsenal: 1 If you’re wondering what this means, feel free to move on the the rest of the post. For me it was pretty exciting. In the English Premier League, there are games constantly going on over the holidays and sometimes wacky things happen. Sometimes those wacky things involve my big bro Mark’s favorite team beat my least favorite team. This was a good way to start the day.
Breakfast tacos: Normally I would go with a breakfast burrito, but I only had small tortillas. Fortunately, I also had three eggs, Aidells sausage and some cheese. Breakfast was served, with chocolate milk of course. I was ready for Bowl Games.
TicketCity Bowl: Admittedly I didn’t watch much of Houston-Penn State, mostly because of the depressing cloud that was still hanging over the game. I feel kinda bad for Houston. I suppose this was still a big moment for them, but it looked like Penn State fans didn’t show up like they normally would have and their players looked ready for this season to just end already. Who can blame them?
Fortunately, there were three other games going on at roughly the same time, the TaxSlayer.com Gator Bowl (seriously), the Outback Bowl and the Capital One Bowl. Based on the last decade or so, you’d expect Ohio State-Florida to be a BCS game. It wasn’t at that level, but it is was still a pretty intriguing match-up now that Florida fans actively hate THE Ohio State University because of Urban Meyer. I would have focused more on this, but Georgia-Michigan State and Nebraska-South Carolina offered far more entertainment due to triple overtime and fist fights respectively. If you aren’t familiar with Georgia quarterback Aaron Murray, get used to the name. You’ll hear loads about him next year. The Outback Bowl also marked the beginning of a crappy week for kickers, as Georgia missed in overtime allowing Michigan State to seal their 148th last second victory this season. The talk going into Nebraska-South Carolina focused on the match-up of potential first rounders Alshon Jeffery and Alfonzo Dennard. I don’t think anyone expected the match-up to happen in the form of a fight. A lot of people might say, “You hate to see that in a bowl game”, but not me. I thought it was fantastic. Without it, there’s probably no chance I’d talk about the Capital One Bowl.
NHL Winter Classic: This is becoming one of my favorite events of the year. For starters, I love hockey. For seconders, the playing outside in big stadiums thing is still a cool gimmick. For thirders, HBO has increased the quality of the experience by 324% with their 24/7 series. There was an added bonus this year with the Flyers losing giving me a rare moment to enjoy in my ongoing feud with the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. It’s a long story.
Rose Bowl: The highlights for me were Oregon winning (I know, I know, but my dad’s an alum and I’ll root for all the Pac 12 teams but one in bowls), the game was extremely entertaining, just two good teams punching and counter-punching for three plus hours, Oregon’s helmets (I like shiny things) and my brother Brian who was at the game sending me a picture of Erin Andrews on the sideline. Also, the first Bridgeport of the day made it’s appearance sometime during this game. That’s good times right there.
Lunch: Cheetos. What can I tell ya? I had a late breakfast.
Fiesta Bowl: I like it when people or teams that have been questioned are validated. All of a sudden, the cool thing to do is to say that maybe Andrew Luck isn’t so great and that maybe Matt Barkley and Robert Griffin III are better. If you watched this game and don’t think Luck is phenomenal, you’re a weirdo. I also think Oklahoma State acquitted themselves well. They beat a darn good Stanford team that plays a vastly different style than theirs, a style that more closely resembles SEC play, except with a quarterback who doesn’t suck, by the way. The last two bowls were about as good as it gets in terms of entertaining, quality football. The bowl system surely has it’s detractors, but days like this one cause it to kinda sorta make sense. Also, Jordan Williamson stinks. Sorry dude.
To cap things off, there was even Monday Night Raw and the season premier of “The Bachelor”. Umm….I mean something else instead of that last one. Ah what the heck. The toothpaste is out of the tube. “The Bachelor”, people! It’s entertaining! Come on! I know at least one reader who is excited. Love you, mom! (Didn’t think I could get my whole family in this post, did you?)
If the rest of 2012 could be like the second day of it, it should be a fun year, if not a productive one. As for Monday, to channel Jimmy V, “That’s a full day. That’s a heck of a day”.
