Camels have humps…Hump Day. Get it?
Good morning and Happy Hump Day, Cougs! I’m assuming you haven’t noticed, but I’ve been absent from this here blog for a few days. I’ve still been reading the excellent work of my cohorts of course, but I’ve been removed from the community aspect of the site. I legitimately couldn’t bring myself to talk about Coug football after another bed pooping by our team in the Bay Area over the weekend. I don’t know what it means for the future of our coaching staff or the program or anything. I just know that it sucked and that it was clear within five minutes that the team could have just hopped right back on a plane and saved us all a lot of trouble. Normally, I’d be turning the corner and thinking things would be better this weekend, but they won’t. I expect more of the same when the Sun Devils come to town. Oh well. I’ll chip in with exactly the degree to which we’ll get shellacked tomorrow, but first I want to get some of my typical ramblings out there, including some much needed perspective, courtesy of the true abomination in State College, PA…
Let’s talk about the NFL, shall we? You know why I want to talk about the NFL? Because the Mighty Bengals of Cincinnati are 6-2! The team I’ve loved (and occasionally loathed) since I was 7 years old has a lovable bunch of young kids that seem to always find a wayto win. It’s the exact opposite of what I’ve come to expect from the Bengals for years. My plea to you readers, especially the Seahawks fans among you, is to jump on the bandwagon with me! The Hawks season is clearly going down in flames and I know we can unite in our hatred of the Steelers (this week’s opponent). Come on, who’s with me?!
This morning, I was watching a couple episodes of “Boy Meets World” before heading off to work (AKA Standard Operating Procedure). This hour I spend with Cory Matthews et. al. is the only time I spend watching ABC Family over the course of a week (I swear). It turns out that ABC Family is running ads for their “Countdown to the 25 Days of Christmas”. They’re counting down to a countdown and showing Christmas movies in early November! No Christmas movies after Thanksgiving, OK?! OK.
Basketball season is less than a week away! Anyone else feel like hoops season has snuck up on them? I’m not sure exactly what to make of this year’s squad. I know that I’m legitimately excited about DaVonte Lacy and I always enjoy the Brock Motum Experience, but will this merry band of swingmen really be able to compete? A strong test at Gonzaga should be fairly telling, but I’m intrigued to see how Ken Bone and company can compensate for a lack of big time talent with X’s and O’s. Expect a little more hoops talk in this space next week after I’ve had a chance to watch the team play in something other than highlights from a 40+ point exhibition blow out.
Last, but by no stretch of the imagination, not least, I want to touch on the situation at Penn State. I’ll spare you the background, because if you don’t know what I’m talking about, I have no clue why you’d be on a website with “Football Blog” in the URL. I don’t wish to address Jerry Sandusky. His comeuppance will come when he rots in jail for the rest of his life. I don’t wish to address those who turned a blind eye to the atrocities. For their disgusting inaction, they will get theirs too. (That includes the venerable JoePa). I want to address the students who thought that the best use of their time yesterday was to rally in support of Coach Paterno. What the hell is the matter with you people? Because the man won a lot of football games and admittedly did a lot for the university, you’re willing to give him a pass even though he had knowledge that one of the worst crimes a person can commit was being committed within the walls of his facility? We make reference from time to time about the beast that is college football and I’m the first to admit that I take it far too seriously and it can be all consuming. I get disproportionately angry about losing seasons (or decades as the case may be), but a football obsession should not be a reason to justify abhorrent human behavior. You can be thankful to Joe Paterno for what he did for your school. That will not be taken away from him, but how can you rally in support of a man who did the bare minimum to stop life altering atrocities about which he had at least some degree of knowledge and opportunity to end? We were reminded this week that people make regrettable decisions in college. It’s part of the deal, but do you want to look back at the time you were 19 when you’re bouncing your own child on your knee and think about the time that you chanted in support of a man who was effectively an accomplice to child molestation? Do you want to look back and think that was your stance because of college football? If that’s OK by you, then touch with reality and perspective has been completely lost. During last week’s game and numerous other times throughout the Paul Wulff area, I’ve referred to the play on the field as an abomination or an embarrassment. I hope that Washington State University or any other school never has to experience a real abomination like what is playing out at Penn State right now.
Go Cougs.
