Happy Hump Day, Cougs!
What a difference a week makes, huh? After laying a big, fat egg at the CLink and prompting me to write one of the most depressing articles in the history of articles, our Cougs bounced back and showed some tremendous fight against a Top 10 team in one of the most difficult places to play. Unfortunately, we were no longer facing Oregon State so even a considerable effort wasn’t enough to get the W. Those Ducks managed to make just enough plays to fight off the Cougs, but certainly we all feel better and it appears that optimism is back on the Palouse. We’re not dead yet, baby!! (Now that I think about it, the media talking about coaches on the hot seat is the “Bring out your dead” guy and Paul Wulff is the “I’m not dead yet” guy. Neato.)
Before we all move on to shifting the focus 100% to the Cal game, I ‘d like to dwell on the week that was just a little bit longer. Of course, because I can’t focus on one thing at a time, I’ll be all over the place. Come along for the ride…
RIP Tebowmania. In a week that featured the completion of one of the most exciting World Series I can recall, it seems most folks wanted to just talk about Tim Tebow. Naturally, since it’s 2011, an internet thing was born. Naturally, like most internet things, it was funny for about 12 minutes, then not funny anymore. Again, it’s still 2011, so another internet thing happened, this time as Tebow spawned one of the greatest comments sections of all time. Enjoy it while you can, folks. As entertaining/interesting as the guy is, he stinks and won’t be starting in the NFL for too long.
Anyone else as bummed as I am about Kim Kardashian getting a divorce? No? Oh. OK. Well I had to mention it. Kinda like how doctors have The Hippocratic Oath and are obliged by certain rules, people on the internet are obliged to write about Tim Tebow and Kim Kardashian. That’s just how it is.
Dirtier player who isn’t actually dirty, but is being labeled as dirty because they have a propensity to play hard and knock the crap out of people: Casey Locker or Ndamukong Suh? The prevailing theory is that offensive football is fan friendly and safer for the players. I’ll happily pooh-pooh that theory and say that the game has become frustrating to watch because of all the flags flying and it becoming seemingly impossible to play defense. As for safety, the hits are still happening and guys are still getting hurt. You just keep laying the wood, Casey (You too, Sekope).
The Ryan Leaf media blitz is in full swing. In case you missed them, he made appearances on the Dan Patrick Show and Peter King’s podcast. On the former, he said that he’ll have to undergo chemo to get the rest of his brain tumor removed. Be well, Ryan. We’re all pulling for you.
Anyone catch that Seahawks Bengals game on Sunday? From me to you, Seahawks fans, I say sincerely, “HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA”. Who Dey.
As for what lies ahead, Washington State will be playing a football game at a baseball stadium on Saturday. I’m beyond bummed that I can’t go since San Fran is one of my favorite places to go and I’m of the belief that we have a heck of a chance to win. Why do we have a heck of a chance to win? Well, as Brian Wilson can attest, dudes who have wacky hair have had success at AT&T Park. Cougs, we might just have the greatest collection of hair in the country. Kaufusi, Pole, Mizell, Hoffman-Ellis, Su’a, Dominique Williams (redshirting, but hopefully on the trip), Guerra, the list goes on and on. My pick won’t come until tomorrow, but rest assured I’m feeling good.
One more thing before I go. Some rumblings came out from players and coaches last week that they were frustrated by the criticism coming from fans on the internets. First I got nervous because I don’t like it when people are mad at me. Second, I wondered what they expected. I appreciate every single one of our players. I acknowledge they are all vastly superior athletes (and quite possibly people) than I am. I want like hell for them to win every single week and do so in great style. I get disappointed when they lose and angry when they lose in a bad fashion. Since I started writing on this here blog, one of the few expectations is that I be honest. If I’m pissed, I’ll say I’m pissed. If players screwed up, I’ll say they screwed up. Maybe they don’t need to know that some nerd like me (or some other nerd on a message board) thinks they stink, but they play a game on national television. Unfortunately, it lends itself to criticism. When the wins come, we’ll all be here to shower with adoration all the same. Please start winning and we’ll show ya.
Go Cougs.
