Hump Day With Huddy – Breaking News Edition

Hump Day With Huddy - Breaking News Edition

Good morning and Happy Hump Day, Cougs! As the all-knowing Sutra eerily predicted on Twitter last night, I do come with big news this morning. Before you get too excited, let me clarify that it isn’t news about coaches or recruits or really anything pertaining to Cougar athletics. As with most Hump Days, it’s all about me, folks. I’m sure you’re all at the edge of your seats right now, but I wish you would step back from the ledge my friend. Don’t be a “Jumper”, but please do go ahead and click on the jump…

Back in October, I decided almost completely at random to include a list of my favorite beers at the end of one of my posts. Aside from proving that I spent exactly zero minutes in any sort of journalism class, I really had no particular reason for including such a list, nor did I have any ulterior motive to rate Bridgeport number one. It was just the honest to goodness truth and hopefully a recommendation that has come in handy for some of you out there. Not long after that, I kicked off a post by tempting copyright law and announcing a sponsorship deal with that very same Bridgeport brewery. Several references and one enterprising email from Huddy’s Buddy the Husky later, I am very proud to announce that what started as schtick has evolved into “Hump Days With Huddy” being actually sponsored by my new best friends at Bridgeport Brewing!

Bridgeport and Huddy…the best team since Captain Planet and the Planeteers

In the interest of full disclosure, it’s not a sponsorship arrangement in the manner with which you’re probably familiar. In fact, I don’t even know exactly what the terms of this arrangement are. All I do know is that one of my new favorite human beings ever, Molly, sent me an email that said they’ll be adding me to the “sample list” and requested my home address. Like I said, I don’t know exactly what this means, but I’m 97% sure it’s awesome. So huge thanks to Molly, to Bridgeport, to Huddy’s Buddy the Husky, to my fellow blogfathers and to you, the readers, for making this dream become a reality (you know, assuming that being on the “sample list” isn’t a thinly veiled excuse for getting my address to which a cease and desist letter will be sent. I’m pretty sure that’s not it.) What does this mean for you, the fans? Unfortunately, I’m going to have to assume that it means next to nothing unless you want to come kick it with some samples, but it’s awesome for me, amiright?!

You know what isn’t awesome, my friends? Ever since I wrote in this space last week about one of the most entertaining sports days in the history of sports days, the mystical Gods of sport have been forcing a massive regression to the mean and repeatedly punching me in the face. I’m used to this sort of thing, but I’ve gotta say it has not been an auspicious start to 2012 for your boy Huddy, at least as it pertains to me as a sports fan. I don’t think I need to go into too much of the gory detail about the problems with our Cougar hoops team. I think it’s probably best summed up by the fact that we are now 16 games into the season and it appears that Ken Bone is nowhere close to settling on a rotation for this team. On the bright side, if you can take away that little problem and the fact that our “best players”/”team leaders” are at the forefront of the struggles and that we lost to one of the worst teams in the country and that we have no identity offensively or defensively and that there has been no real indication that it will get better anytime soon – if you take all that away, things really aren’t so bad.

Of course, my personal sports hell has not been limited to Cougar hoops. I’ve been extremely vocal on This Here Blog about my love for the Bengals. I appreciate those of you that were rooting for them on my behalf this weekend. I’m sorry that I temporarily made you do that. I’ve been at it for over 20 years and it’s just not that much fun. Fortunately for me, in the immediate aftermatch of that disaster on Saturday, I had an Everett Silverips game to go to. Of course, they got shut out. I should have told my buddy that gave me the ticket and is an actual ‘Tips fan that having me slip on the home team’s sweater for the game pretty much sealed their fate. At least I’ve got the Wizards and they aren’t the laughing stock of the NBA right now. What’s that? They actually are the laughingstock of the NBA? Well….shoot. Good thing the Capitals are were Stanley Cup contenders!

So where does the hope come from at this point? I would go all in on the WSU women’s basketball team, but I think I’ve done enough damage. I’ll keep their season a jinx free zone and hope they keep doing their thing. I’ll just have to keep riding it out with the same teams I have been and not bring my loser fan stench upon any unsuspecting teams. The good news? That means I’ll have plenty of hope in reserve for Cougar football! Before you try to run me off and make me try to cheer the Huskies into the ground, keep in mind “hope” is a word that actually belongs with Cougar football right now! There is a massive attitude change going on with the program and as Lucas mentioned yesterday, Coach Leach and his staff have a pretty big recruiting weekend on tap (although, in the spirit of breaking news today, I’ll pass along word that I caught via Twitter that Jaydon Mickenswill no longer be coming now that he’s received an offer from Oklahoma State). In the closing weeks of the recruiting process and through Spring Ball, the picture will start to become more and more clear of what we can expect when August rolls around and the Cougs really start to get down to business. I think we can all agree that when that picture is done, we’re all going to like what we see. Heck, maybe before too long we’ll even get in that big tournament they have at the end of the year to decide who the best teams are to go to a bowl game in a fun place! Sorry about that. I got confused because I thought that something called the Bowl Championship Series was actually some sort of series. Gonna have to sit down with a pint of Bridgeport and try to figure that thing out.

Go Cougs.
