Ichiro Suzuki plans on playing forever.
Okay, not really, but the free agent outfielder expects to play at least one more year in the big leagues.
“I have every intention of playing in the Major Leagues next year,” Ichiro told MLB Network. “Where will that be? I cannot tell you because baseball is not an individual sport and so it’s not just up to my feeling that I want to play. Somebody has to feel that they want to give me the opportunity to play. But I have every intention of playing.”
Ichiro, who has spent the last two-plus seasons with the New York Yankees, has 2844 hits in his Major League career and, when you combine that number with his totals in Japan, is just 134 shy of Pete Rose’s all-time hit record.
And while those numbers are obvious motivators, they’re not the only reason he wants to continue playing.
“They just happen to be two goals that are right in front of me so they are there for the taking, so of course I want them,” Ichiro said. “But that’s not the reason that I want to continue to play. I want to continue to play because I think that I can still continue to play my game.”
