John Kruk was quoted saying, “He’s not as consistent as Adam Jones, and just because you make one spectacular–er, I mean, two spectacular catches, doesn’t mean you deserve the Gold Glove.” When I first heard that I was taken aback because I mean, how could you not give the gold glove to the Angels’ savior Michael Nelson Trout. Mike is one of the few players in the day today where if he is up to bat people will stop what they are doing to watch and see what he does, every time he’s on the field he is going to do something. This is about Trout being snubbed for the gold glove though.
Don’t get me wrong I’m not saying that Adam Jones isn’t a good center fielder. Adam is above average with good speed which enables him to run balls down. He also possesses a strong arm. He’s an all star, but Mike Trout is too, but better. Not just better, he’s in fact in a different league than Jones. Trout all season only committed two errors while Jones committed 8. Trout’s fielding percentage while in center was .993 and Jones’ was .982. I know that .011 isn’t a huge difference, but a fielding percentage of .993 is amazing. .982 is an above average but it’s nowhere close to .993. Adam Jones saved 13 runs as an outfielder, which is really good. It ranks him fifth in runs saved as an outfielder. Trout on the other hand saved 15 runs! That was the third most runs saved by any outfielder in this big leagues.
My routine for every night during the baseball season was this: 6:30 pm Angels live pregame, 7:00 pm Angels game, 10:00 pm Angels live postgame, 10:30 pm ESPN or MLB Network to watch other games highlights. I consider myself a huge baseball fan. I watch highlights every night. Almost every night there was a Mike Trout highlight. Maybe once a week or once every two weeks did I see an Adam Jones highlight.
You have all of the information, Mike Trout had better defensive metrics along with all of the amazing catches he’s had still replaying through your head. I may be biased as a die-hard Angels fan but Trout is the obvious Gold Glove winner this past season and everyone knows it.
Heck, I even scanned Orioles Blogs/Forums and their own fans were in shock that Adam Jones beat out Mike Trout. That’s saying something as they’ve witnessed their own centerfielder throughout the 162 game season while graced with Trout’s lone Camden Yards thievery of J.J. Hardy just once.
It just makes one wonder who exactly voted for the award… Orioles beat writers? Jones’ family? A raffle drawing? Either way, Mike Trout was screwed out of an award that we cannot take seriously anymore going forward.
