If we could be serious for a minute…..

We rarely do serious posts here at Days of Y’Orr. It obviously isn’t our style. Quite frankly we’re not even remotely good at being serious. Not on this blog and certainly not in our day to day lives. We take hockey so obnoxiously seriously that we had to form a blog to do ridiculous photoshops and needlessly troll opposing fan bases just to take the edge off.

We’ve certainly jumped up on our soap box here multiple times and decried judging a player for what he does off the ice. Here is a good example.

But Tim Thomas is making that increasingly hard. Greg wrote this post about a little trolling we did to Tim Thomas after he came out in support of Chik-Fil-A after they came out in opposition of gay marriage. 

Bruins fans who refuse to take off their black and gold tinted goggles (something we have certainly been guilty of at times here at DOY) jumped down our throats, saying Thomas never came out against gay people as a whole, just gay marriage. Just because a player plays, or in this case played, for your favorite team doesn’t mean they can do no wrong and for someone like Thomas who preaches about being a free citizen and holding dear to his rights as a free citizen to come out against the rights of citizens who’s lifestyle differs from his seems a bit hypocritical doesn’t it?

And maybe he didn’t expressly come out and say being gay is wrong, but he did quote a lot of that “wrath of god” crap that people tend to quote when speaking of the gay community. If there is a god, we would like to think he or she has better things to do with their time than worry about who’s marrying who. Like, you know, fixing next season so that the Bruins win another Cup.

Does Thomas have the right to express his opinion and express his beliefs? Of course. So do we. And because we disagree with him we’ll express our opinion, as is our right, no matter how silly or childish the methods of that expression might be. The DOY staff is, after all, over grown children much to the chagrin of our significant others.

When Thomas refused to go to the White House we didn’t necessarily care. He was a beast on the ice and that is all we cared about. We didn’t need to know or care what his opinions off the ice were as long as he wasn’t pulling a Sandusky or kicking puppies into pools of sharks with laser beams on their heads.

When he decided not to honor his contract and started posting weird religious messages on our Facebook, we tried our best to look the other way even though it broke our hearts because, again, he brought the city of Boston it’s first Stanley Cup in our lifetime. Perhaps we are finding out that logic may be a bit flawed.

Just like some many believe church and state should be separate, we believed on ice play and off ice personality should be separate. But Timmy is making that harder and harder.

It may be hard to believe based on our love for trolling and annoying people by (almost) any means necessary, but the Days of Y’Orr staff is about as laid back as it gets. We don’t care what color you are, who you’re sleeping with (unless it is a Sabres fan) or if you’re picking a partner who has the same sex parts as you. If you love hockey and Batman we probably love you. And maybe we’re hypocritical for trolling Thomas for speaking out against gay marriage when we support it. And if that loses us a few readers, who cares. After all it’s just a blog.

I can’t speak for the rest of the Days of Y’Orr staff, but I’ve always been grateful for parts of my upbringing. My mother and step father were umm…. fairly closed minded to put it nicely. If you weren’t white or straight they didn’t like you. At all. Luckily for me, my father was the exact opposite. If you were nice to him, he was nice to you. He didn’t care about the rest. I think that is why it is hard for me to separate Thomas off ice from Thomas on ice now. Based on my upbringing and opinions, I just can’t understand why someone would think certain groups don’t have a right to get married, just as I’m sure people with the opposite opinion can’t understand how I think certain groups should able to get married. 

No one on the Days of Y’Orr staff has ever been shy about speaking out against things we disagree with, no matter how trivial. That is why we had to troll Thomas. We just can’t support his views. On or off the ice anymore. We’ll always be thankful for everything he did for Boston on the ice. But as much as we don’t want it to, his off the ice shenanigans have cracked the foundation of that legacy a bit in our eyes.

But Timmy… despite all this… deep down in our hearts… we want you to know something…..
