I’m back, and thank you

It’s Saturday night at 8:14pm (and Michigan still sucks), and I have decided to return to my trusty computer and return to The BBC.

I want to thank everybody for their support through this difficult week.  The multiple comments in the thread, the emails I got, everything that you sent kept my spirits up.  Thank you.

As you can read below, it wasn’t an easy week, but I will say that I have never been to a more entertaining funeral in my life.  Seriously, we put the “fun” in funeral.

My dad had the best sense of humor, and he would have been happy to hear that we turned his funeral into a festival of laughs.  If my mom wouldn’t be so upset with me, I’d post the video of it on YouTube for all to see.  But, that would probably be a little too low-brow, even for my dad.

But I do want to share the story my brother Dave told during his half of the eulogy.  His words (a summary);

“Not many people know how my father passed away, so let me tell you briefly.  Dad had a ventilator down his throat, so he couldn’t speak, and I was with him Saturday night when he died.  It was clear that he was struggling, and since he couldn’t speak, he wrote down what he was trying to say.  Immediately after he was done scribbling, he passed away.  I cried and held my dad’s hand one last time, but I haven’t had the courage to read what his final words were.  I still have that note, and I can’t bring myself to read them.  I wanted to introduce my brother Jeff to speak, and maybe he can read this final note from dad.”

I approached the podium, hugged my older brother, and unfolded the note.  The entire room was silent, and I choked back a tear, leaned into the microphone and read the note…….

“You’re standing on my oxygen line”

The entire room burst into laughter.

My brother wasn’t really there when Dad passed away, but only about 10 people knew that.  Dave had pulled off the perfect joke and the entire room went nuts for it.

And my father, looking down from Heaven, was probably never prouder of his sons than he was at that moment.
