I'm terrified of Darin Mastroianni

It’s pretty well acknowledged, at this point, that bad teams seem to make mediocre players look good. I mean, was Ron Coomer any good back in the 90s? Matt Lawton? And historically bad teams tend to latch on to flashes in the pan, like Lew Ford, who was brilliant for a season and a half, than abysmal for the rest of his career.

Thus, I am terrified of Darin Mastroianni. He is having a decent season, in limited time, with two home runs, a couple triples and blazing speed in the outfield. The Twins are terrible, which makes Mastroianni look like he might be a glimmer of hope. This is bad.

If you take his entire career into account, you will note that he has never had a slugging percentage above .400, as he does in the Majors, and his ISO is twice as high as it was in minor league ball. He didn’t come to Minnesota and suddenly sprout muscles. This is an aberration. Hell, even his .276 batting average may be an aberration,

4th outfielder? Sure, maybe. Remember Joey Gathright? I think that’s a good target for Mastroianni’s career path. Of course, it seemed like everyone thought Gathright would be a huge star too.

I’m terrified that the Twins reserve a roster spot for him for the next few years.
