Thanks to TMQ, this article shows at what distances and yard lines a team should go for it on fourth down.

Basically from your own 35 on, anything less than fourth and 4 should always be attempted.  I love it.  Now, I believe that you take into account certain game situations.  For instance, in a 6-6 game in the third quarter, you can figure that scoring and yards are at a premium and be more conventional perhaps.  But, in a 24-21 game in the third quarter, you have to assume your defense is not going to start getting stops suddenly.  If they haven’t gotten them all game, why hope for a miraculous change.
