After taking three players on day one and ten on day two, the Indians chose players for the final thirty rounds of the draft on Saturday. While no team is forced to choose forty players, all thirty teams did so this year and it is a continuation on the Indians part of drafting and signing as many players as possible. This strategy makes sense as it’s almost impossible to predict who among the drafted will be future Major Leaguers, so it is best to take as many chances as possible. It’s also almost impossible to evaluate 30 players in a single article, so what follows will mostly be a simple listing of names.
Round 11: Andrew Calica LHH, CF from UC Santa Barbara
Age | AB | HR | BB | K | SB | AVG | OBP | SLG | |
2016 | 22 | 204 | 4 | 44 | 20 | 18 | .275 | .451 | .392 |
Career | – | 582 | 5 | 87 | 81 | 43 | .297 | .431 | .385 |
With 18 steals this year and 43 in his last three seasons, Calica is an interesting player, especially since he made it to his senior year. Also worth noting is that even though he isn’t a great hitter, he has excellent command of the strike zone so far in his development.

The only people who know what the Indians were thinking when drafting Farish and others like him, who had less than impressive college numbers, but we can postulate. There is little relevance from college dominance to Major League stardom. This is most likely a case where Indians scouts saw the pitcher in person and saw something they liked while believing they could improve upon those things that didn’t work so well. It’s obvious from his strike out rate that Farish can generate swings and misses, but control is a serious issue.
