The Colts late rally fell one completion short in Foxboro Sunday afternoon. Down a very familiar 17 points (31-14) in the fourth quarter, Indy scored 14 unanswered point and was driving for the win when Peyton Manning was picked at the New England six yard line. In pre-game interviews, the Colts listed preparing for trick plays, pressuring New England quarterback Tom Brady, and getting the offense on track as keys to beating the Patriots. How’d they do?

Pre-Game Objectives:

  1. Watch for trick plays – No trick plays on offense, but the Patriots defense used some trickery to disguise their coverage. The interception late in the third quarter was a result of Peyton mis-reading the defense. Grade: C
  2. Pressure Tom Brady – One sack, one quarterback hit, and Brady was rarely rushed. His offensive line provided him plenty of time to stand in the pocket and deliver strikes. In the ongoing comparisons between the two quarterbacks, the play of their respective offensive lines is rarely mentioned. If Peyton had the time Brady had last night, we’d be talking about a win. Grade: D
  3. Get the offense on track – With the exception of a Donald Brown 36 yard run, the running game was non-existent. Peyton racks up 396 passing yards to eight different receivers. Four drives result in touchdowns (69, 85, 73, and 73 yards), and the offense was four-of-four in the red zone. Considering the number of injuries and the recent lack of production, this is encouraging. Still, few teams can overcome three interceptions to a quality opponent. Grade: B

Too high? Too low? What grades would you give them?
