Tip to Kuharsky, there’s no doubt about it.
In the first month, the Colts were competitive on special teams, allowing an average of 22.0 yards on kickoff returns. That was with Pat Angerer, Jacob Tamme , Justin Tryon, Brody Eldridge, Kavell Conner and Melvin Bullitt covering kicks. All became starters because of those injuries.
To fill out the roster, the Colts signed Cornelius Brown on Nov. 1, Chip Vaughn on Nov. 16, Al Afalava on Nov. 23, Taj Smith on Nov. 30, Nate Triplett on Dec. 1, Ken Hamlin on Dec. 22 and Mike Richardson on Dec. 27, all defensive players. Vaughn got hurt and went on injured reserve after one week.
All were plucked from the unemployment line – and all handed to Rychelski. With no mini-camps, no off-season program, no training camp and no contact in the daily late-season practice sessions, those players were asked to contain Ford, Mark Mariani and Cromartie during the final three weeks.
