Inspector Gadget’s annual report from Eagles TC— and notes on Sunday’s practice…

bftb-xl

Every year this time of August we look at some of the new equipment developments coming into the league. This time we'll look at training camp gadgets.

But first— a quick review of Sunday's practice.

Here's a very distilled summary of Jimmy Kempski's observations:

-Eagles QB's Vick and Foles spent most of the session checking down to their running backs as the rule of the day seemed to be go through your progressions and then check down…. Kempski seemed to credit the defense for causing the check-downs, but personally I have a feeling Kelly wanted to work with his backs on executing those safety-valve type plays. I think he knows he's gonna need a lot of them…

-Matt Barkley barely disguised his disappointment after Sunday's practice. He's not getting the prime reps and now knows he's not really in the running for QB#1.

-Keep it Simple Dept.— Assistant coaches are using flash cards with pictures to send in signals, formations and alignments. This fact should merit a "Wow!" from Sunbutts—the highly esteemed curmudgeon.

-Mychal Kendricks had a great day in outside linebacker coverage.

-Brandon Boykin was running with the 1's at outside corner.

-Chris McCoy was showing off his lateral coverage potential at outside linebacker.

-Earl Wolff redeemed himself with a good outing at safety—even got a pick.

-Bennie Logan knocked down a pass at the line of scrimmage—always nice to know that kind of defensive dimension is in his bag.

-And we had our first TC Fight of NovaCare 2013… Clifton Geathers (6-8, 340) took on the entire Eagles offensive line.

As for Inspector Gadget…. I noticed a lot of new looks to old equipment ideas appearing in practice video backgrounds. I also observed these changing trends in equipment back at the Combine.

For instance, those big orange dummies with rotating claw arms…

When did those guys become de rigeur?

There's a bunch of other stuff, too…

The training aids really aren't that different from the past — they just look different.

Most of the emphasis in football is still upon resistance training and agility training. There's no getting around that after over 100 years of the sport. But the gadgets used to attain a training edge today are getting bigger, brighter and fancier.

Just to satisfy my own curiosity, I logged on to a site called Sports Unlimited Inc. com. This is a company that wholesales training gadgets to the NFL and to colleges. This is not a paid advertisement, I merely stumbled onto the site.

I was curious about what the best-selling NFL training gadgets are right now, and what they might cost.

Here's a sample of what's been showing up at Eagles camp in particular:

Fisher Adjustable Agility Master 20' Running Ropes

Fisher Catch All Football Vest

Fisher Power Blaster Football Trainer

SKLZ SpeedSac Sprint Trainer

Fisher Bull Rush One Man Blocking Football Sled - Pummel Pad

SKLZ Hopz Vertical Leap Resistance Trainer

Blazer Football Kick Cage Package

Fisher Football Snap Coach

Just a sampling of some of the new-look gadgets out there…but all based on ancient theory of resistance and agility training.
