Intel on Stephone Anthony from @Maniebeingmanie

With all the new drafted players on board for the Black and Gold I took the time to reach out to some of the most knowledgeable fans, beat writers and bloggers for information on what to expect from the newest crop of talent. I think most of us were more excited about the Saints’ second 1st round pick than their first. That second 1st rounder would of course be linebacker Stephone Anthony out of Clemson, who was selected 31st overall. I caught up with Manie Robinson of Greenville News to get the skinny on the Saints’ newest defenders. Manie covers Clemson football as closely and thoroughly as anyone. Here’s what he had to say about Anthony:

Anthony was a mainstay in Clemson’s 4-3 since his arrival four years ago. Even as a recruit, he was heralded for his downhill speed and instincts as a middle linebacker. However, through the duration of his career, he was not credited enough for his mastery of the scheme and playbook.

Clemson defensive coordinator Brent Venables often praised Anthony for his study habits and intelligent play. One may not be able to gather that from speaking with Anthony. He is not as soft-spoken as his former teammate Vic Beasley, but Anthony is just as frugal with words.

At Clemson, he wasn’t utilized much as a pass rusher or as a perimeter pass defender. Thus, his ability to fill in as a 3-4 outside linebacker is unproven. However, his athleticism, speed, quickness, power and 6-3, 245-pound frame equip him to shift within the second level. If Venables’ assessment of his football IQ is accurate, Anthony should provide immediate versatility and productivity to the Saints’ linebacker corps.

Many thanks to Manie for taking the time. I didn’t realize a scheme change was involved, so that adjustment heightens my concern slightly. Otherwise he seems like a great fit for the Saints locker room. What are your thoughts?
