Every year, I learn a little bit more about baseball. Things happen that I don’t expect based on my knowledge of things coming into each season. Accordingly, the first thing I’d like to do as this season wraps down is look at various players and situations that I was wrong about and see if there’s anything to be learned from each case.
This year, four immediate players come to mind.
- Nyjer Morgan
- Garrett Jones
- Zach Duke
- Andy LaRoche
In each case, one level of performance was expected based on minor league levels, projections, and past Major League experience, but each player far exceeded or failed to meet certain expectations. Why? And what does that mean? Those are the questions I’ll try to answer.
Anyways, I’ll probably kick this off on Monday. I might have the Morgan post up tomorrow because I think that one’s the easiest one to write, but I might not get it done with the football game tonight. The reason I’m posting this preface to the whole thing is because I want suggestions for other players that fit the bill that might be worth investigating. If any come to mind, post them in the comments and I’ll take them into consideration.
