Question: who is a better rushing team, Pittsburgh, New England or Tampa Bay? Answer Below!
Raheem Morris has made the statement many times this year; that stats are for losers, and indeed many times the team who ended up on the right side of the scoreboard did not come out best in the stat sheet. Each week you can see the QBs who have the most yards usually have lost, but is that a season long trend? Lets take a look: Peyton Manning Philip Rivers Drew Brees Matt Schaub Kyle Orton Those five QBs are tops in yardage, yet their teams records are nothing to write home about. The top two guys are 8-6, with Drew Brees being the best rep at least team-wise with a 10-4 standing. The 4th and 5th most productive QBs in the NFL belong to teams with a losing record; 5-9 and 3-11! Now change the criteria a little, and go with QB rating, and you get a different result. Tom Brady Philip Rivers Micheal Vick Aaron Rodgers Matt Cassel These QBs are represented by teams in a better position, winning records; Brady’s Patriots are the best team at 12-2, with Rivers being the only thrower in both lists. Vick has his Eagles flying high at 10-4, and Rodgers Packers are 8-6. Cassle has the KC Chiefs at 9-5. Quite a turn around huh? It would seem just yardage isnt getting the job done for stats followers. What about rushing? Surely that individual stat has more of a tie to the W/L record right? Top 5 rushers currently after week 15; with team records… Arian Foster 5-9 Houston Texans Maurice Jones-Drew 8-6 Jacksonville Jamaal Charles 9-5 KC Darren McFadden 7-7 Oakland Chris Johnson 6-8 Tennessee Only one of the top rushers in the league has their team with a good record, and one other has a winning record. McFadden has led a nice Raider turnaround that stands nice on its own story, but is still 7-7, while the other two, including the top rusher in the league has a losing record. When you look at over all team rushing leaders, two new teams are added, The Eagles (mostly because of Vick) and the NY Giants, both winning teams. Obviously the old addage is still true, you run the ball as a team, you win. And the other one too, Stats… are for losers. WHERE ARE THE BUCS- Quick segment this week, Tampa Bay is the 9th best rushing team in the league, which is one of the best rankings ever in Bucs history. Here is the kicker, average .6 of a yard more per game, and we move up to 7th! Thats 2 more feet per game and the Bucs move that high! Currently, the Bucs are as good a running team as the Pittsburgh Steelers, and run better than Carolina and New England! The Bucs are 4th place is amount of 40+ yard runs, with three of them, tied with Giants, Chiefs, Colts and Panthers. We are 7th place in 20+ yard runs with 13, equal with Carolina and Jacksonville. Raheem Morris has been successful with turning the Bucs into a physical running team. Passing yardage Tampa Bay is 19th, but Josh Freeman is the 13th best QB as far as QB rating. The Bucs O-line, with only Donald Penn as the sole surviving starter from week one, has the Bucs as the 10th least sacked team in the league. With Josh Freeman, the Bucs are ranked 3rd in interceptions given up! So don’t think the Bucs shouldn’t make the playoffs because they’re not good on defense. They are good enough on offense to qualify.
