I was minding my own business this morning when I logged into twitter and saw that somebody had re-tweeted this tweet:

Shortly thereafter, I came upon the Isaiah Crowell news.
| Georgia tailback Isaiah Crowell was arrested early Friday morning and remains in Athens-Clarke County Jail on three weapons charges, two of them felonies.
The sophomore from Columbus was booked at 3:37 a.m. on charges of possessing a concealed weapon, having a weapon in a school zone and having an altered ID mark on that weapon. His bond, originally set at $7,500, was raised to $9,500 late Friday morning. |
Isaiah is clearly a talent football player but he’s also clearly not mature enough to play college football at a University as big as Georgia. With this arrest Georgia should cut ties with the once promising running back.
Georgia will be fine at RB. Crowell may have had the highest immediate upside at RB for Georgia but he was not without his faults and as Georgia fans can attest Crowell’s heart was very much in doubt in the second half of last season. Georgia will now rely on Ken “Boo” Malcome to be the #1 running back when camp starts. Senior Richard Samuel and incoming freshmen Keith Marshall and Todd Gurley will battle over carries behind Malcome.
Despite the loss (or pending loss) of Crowell, Georgia is still in better shape at RB this year then they were last year when they went into the season with Richard Samuel as the starter (having just been move back from LB) and Crowell and Carlton Thomas behind him.
Losing Crowell will hurt Georgia in the short-term but it won’t be crippling and if Marshall or Gurley can have even a moderate impact early in the season then Georgia fans will soon forget the name Isaiah. This is yet another cautionary tale in the world of college football. When you are a big-time recruit or player you need to know you have a microscope on you at all times. Crowell has gotten in trouble before at Georgia and despite what we had been hearing this spring it seems like he didn’t learn his lesson. Now his future is in doubt. Maybe this was Crowell’s way out of being in a situation he really didn’t want to be in. Some people just aren’t cut out to be college footbal players.

| Georgia tailback Isaiah Crowell has been dismissed from the team following his arrest early Friday morning on three weapons charges.
Georgia coach Mark Richt made the announcement in short news release sent out by UGA Sports Communications at 5 p.m. on Friday. “We have a dedicated and committed group of men who are working hard to prepare for the coming season,” Richt said. “Our total focus will be directed toward the team and this effort.” |
