Isaiah Pead, Derek Wolfe, Butch Jones win top Big East Honors

The Big East released their post-season honors today and everything came up Bearcat.

In what had to be a shocking twist, Isaiah Pead was named the Big East Offensive Player of the Year. It’s the very first time that a Cincinnati player has won the Big East Offensive Player of the Year award. Pead had a fantastic season, rushing for 11 TDs, catching 3 TDs, rushing for 1,110 yards and carrying the UC offense. I dont’ know how Geno Smith, who was far and away the best QB in the league, didn’t win the award. Politics? Maybe. Congratulations to Isaiah, who definitely played up to the honor. A truly great season for a great back.

Derek Wolfe shared the Big East Defensive Player of the Year honor with Khaseem Greene from Rutgers. Wolfe had 19.5 tackles for loss and 9 sacks. He was unblockable at times, and one of the standouts of the Cincinnati defense. He’s the first Bearcat to be honored as the Big East Defensive Player of the Year. Khaseem Greene was the first Rutgers player to win that honor as well. He had 127 tackles, which was ridiculous.

Butch Jones was named the Big East Coach of the Year. UC was picked to finish 5th in the league, and ended up with a share of the title, and 9 wins for the season. Congratulations to Coach Jones.

The Big East Rookie of the Year was Louisville QB Teddy Bridgewater, Special Teams Player of the Year Tavon Austin of West Virginia.

The first and second team All Big East teams were released. Randy Martinez, JK Schaffer, Drew Frey and Pat O’Donnell join their teammates previously honored on the list. Somehow Smith wasn’t a unanimous first team pick, which is stupid and I hate everyone who votes on these awards. You had no QBs throw for over 2,700 yards, no QBs with more than 23 TDs and no one as efficient. So that means someone voted for Ryan Nassib or something stupid. Second team selections include Alex Hoffman and Zombie Zach Collaros.
