Isaiah Thomas may be a free agent in the coming weeks, but that did not stop the Sacramento Kings starting point guard from stopping by City Hall for Tuesday’s monumental arena vote. The Tacoma native is ready for the challenges ahead and believes that he has done enough to make himself a load of cash in free agency this summer.
“The numbers speak for themselves,” Thomas told Cowbell Kingdom.
Hours before the lottery balls failed the Kings once again, CK caught up with the diminutive point guard. While there was one other person involved in the conversation, here are the questions and answers from Cowbell Kingdom.
CK: What are you doing here, knowing that you are a free agent?
IT: Show my support, that’s all. That’s all I can do is show my support for the fans that showed me love since day one. It’s not about me, it’s about them right now.
CK: How has your summer been going? What is it that you are working on?
IT: Everything, man. I want to come back a more complete player. I feel I can be one of the best guards in the NBA and I’m going to put in the work to do that. There’s nothing specific that I’m really working on, I just want to get better at all aspects.
CK: We keep hearing all the press, but what is it you’re thinking about as you go into free agency? Is it Kings? Is it the best fit for you? Where is it you want to be?
IT: Whatever’s best for myself and my family. That’s all I can look forward to right there, because I’ve never been a part of nothing like that and I just have to do what’s best for myself. At the end of the day, I just want to be wanted. I just want to be wanted for being 5-9. I want to be wanted for being, like I said, a score-first point guard. I want to be wanted. If they want me here (in Sacramento), I want to be here.
CK: Do you think you did enough this season to prove you are a starting NBA point guard?
IT: I mean, the numbers speak for themselves. She don’t think I’m a starting NBA point guard (Thomas pointed to a reporter nearby), but it’s fine. But I just got to keep proving people wrong and that’s what I’m going to do. I’m going to use that as motivation to keep proving to people that I am a starting point guard in this league.
CK: How much is this just a waiting game for you?
IT: It is. That’s what it’s all about. I don’t know what’s going to happen. All I know is I did the best I possibly could to worry about the things I can control. And that’s going out there and giving my all each and every night. For now, it’s out of my hands.
CK: How did your exit interview go with coach Michael Malone?
IT: It went great. Coach Malone has been 100 percent real with me since day one. And we talk almost every day. He’s texting me. We talk about the games, who’s playing. About the draft, what I think about this player. He’s a great guy, man. The best coach I’ve had since I’ve been here and he’s a player’s coach.
CK: Is he in your corner trying to get you back?
IT: I think so.
CK: Are you ready for that day when people stop talking about the fact that you are 5-9?
IT: I’m ready for it. Like I said, I just want to go somewhere where I’m wanted. Where I’m wanted for being 5-9 and I’m wanted for being a scoring point guard. That’s all I want. And hopefully it’s here.
