Yovani Gallardo pitched 4 innings of no hit ball Sunday…while the offense scored 5 runs in those 4 innings.
The Brewers lost 9-5.
Which means, just like yesterday, the Cardinals’ bullpen dominated and the Brewers’ pen stunk…well, at least one pitcher did.
Gallardo proceeded to give up 4 runs, all earned, in the 5th inning…still, the Crew led, 5-4 after 5; Brian Shouse pitched a scoreless 6th; Scott Linebrink pitched a scoreless 7th. Then Derrick Turnbow took the mound in the 8th…first he gives up a single to pinch-hitter Skip “The Unknown” Schumaker; then one to Yadier “It Must Be My Day to Get a Hit” Molina; after striking out Adam Kennedy, Scott “Yes, I Only Get Hits when Dave benches me on his fantasy team” Rolen hits an RBI single; then David Eckstein singles. Carlos Villanueva replaces Turnbow…and proceeds to walk Ryan Ludwick, before giving up a double to Albert Pujols…Pujols got thrown out at third trying to stretch his double, and Villanueva then fanned Chris Duncan, but 5 runs scored.
The Brewers’ offense did manage 14 hits…every frikkin’ one of them were singles.
The Cubs’ won, too. The papers tomorrow will say that the Brewers still have a ½ game lead, but that is only because the Brewers have played three more games than the Cubs, and have two more wins…in the loss column, which is the truest measure, the Cubs’ now hold a one game lead…and it looks like Kerry Wood may come back, too.
The Brewers have a day off on Monday, while the Cubs host the Phillies, so the Brewers can actually move back into a tie with Chicago with a Cubs loss. The Brewers return home to face the Mets on Tuesday.
