It Took Extra Innings and Two Homers from Papi, but Sox Take Opener Against O’s!

The Red Sox headed into Camden Yards to play the winners of the Al East pennant, the Baltimore Orioles.  The Sox had just been swept by the Pirates and had rookie Allen Webster on the mound.  Webster pitched well, however the Sox would give up their lead in the 7th and end up having to head into extra innings for the win.  Luckily for the Sox, David Ortiz hit not one, but two homeruns and that gave them the win.

The Orioles would get on the scoreboard first, but they wouldn’t hold on to that lead for long.  The O’s score a single run in the bottom of the 3rd when Nelson Cruz hit an infield single that allowed Schoop to score from 3rd.  Sox 0-1.  The Sox were able to not only tie the game, but take the lead in the top of the 4th.  Ortiz and Cespedes hit back to back solo homeruns to have the Sox in the lead.  That homerun from Papi was his 100th RBI of the season and made it the 8th time he has had 30 HRs and 100 RBIs.  Papi was tied with 7 with Ted Williams and he surpassed his record last night.  Papi’s heroics would not be done, but it would have to wait until extra innings.

In the 5th inning the Sox added an insurance run when Ortiz hit a single and Mookie Betts came all the way from 1st base by way of some speedy baserunning and a catching error from the O’s catcher Joseph.  Sox 3-1.  Webster would last until 2 outs in the 6th inning and then Tommy Layne would come in to get the final out of the inning.  Webster pitched well, but not sure he is making a case that he should be in the rotation in 2015.  Burke Badenhop got 2 outs in the 7th inning and then Farrell made the mistake of going to Craig Breslow for the final out of the inning.  Breslow was unable to get the out and ended up giving up the Sox lead in the process.  Breslow gave up a double and then an RBI triple to Delmon Young.  Alex Wilson would come in for the 3rd out and he would have had it if it wasn’t for a throwing error from Bogaerts.  Wilson got a groundball, but Xander overthrew it and Pearce was safe and the tying run crossed the plate.  Sox 3-3.

The Red Sox saw former relief pitcher Andrew Miller in the 8th inning and he got the outs the O’s needed to still be tied at the end of the inning.  Alex Wilson pitched a scoreless 8th and then Junichi Tazawa pitched a scoreless 9th to send us to extra innings.  In the top of the 10th the Sox would go ahead with help from their most clutch hitter David Ortiz.  Papi hit his 2nd homerun of the night, this time a 2 run dinger off of O’Day.  Sox 5-3.  With that homer, Ortiz now has 34 homeruns and 102 RBIs on the season.  Not too shabby, not at all.  Edward Mujica who has been the newly crowned closer for the Sox came to the mound and he was able to get the job done.  Mujica secured his the win and his 7th save of the season.
