The NBA Draft begins in about an hour and I’ll be watching and blogging as the night goes on just in case the Spurs happen to find themselves in the first round. If not, when they pick at number 59, I’ll still be watching wondering why I wasted my entire night to find out the name of a guy who, chances are, will never make it into a Spurs uniform.
But let’s not be too sure, as names like Robertas Javtokas, Luis Scola and Manu Ginobili have come from these late second round picks. Javtokas is expected to sign soon, and Scola may be included in a trade so the Spurs can move up.
The Spurs definitley have several needs, especially after trading away Rasho Nesterovic and with chances getting smaller and smaller that Nazr Mohammed will be wearing silver and black next season.
Along with the center/power forward position, the front office is said to be interested in picking up an athletic small forward or point guard if they are able to move up, and they have brought in several players in the weeks up to the draft.
Former U of L guard Dwayne Mitchell has been mentioned as a possible pickup when the Spurs select at #59.
“I’ve talked to a lot of teams … the Spurs, Charlotte, recently the Knicks and the Rockets about a week ago,” said University of Louisiana basketball coach Robert Lee. “From the people I talked to, I think he has a chance from the middle to the latter part of the second round.”
Keep checking ProjectSpurs.com and the blog throughout draft night for any updates.
