It’s simulation season!

Every year as soon as the regular NCAA football season ends, we are confronted with bowl selection and the nearly universal hatred for the BCS. Of course, this season, we are also being introduced to constant conference realignment and the BCS is on its way out the door.

Of course, these two changes will make things LESS fair. The bigger conferences will likely make it more difficult for small schools to get into the national championship game, and the 4 team tournament will still be based upon the press rankings, likely biased from the beginning of the year. It’s still plagued by problems, is what I’m saying.

Alas! The other tradition around this time of year is the Victoria Times football simulation. Of course, the Victoria Times is no more, so now it is the Rhino and Compass version. For those that need a reminder, the simulation is based on 12 geographic conferences (which remain unchanged in 5 years!) of 10 teams. The conference champions are entered into a tournament (sorted exactly like the NFL playoffs) and seeds are based on team records and conference strength weights. The conference strength weighting is done by games played outside of the conference. The schedule is based entirely on the season before. I’ll get into that more when the simulation is over.

The important thing is… the simulation has started. Whatifsports publishes seasonal rosters, and the 2012 iterations have been released. I am 2/3rds of the way through week 1. Alabama looks strong so far. North Carolina and Oklahoma State are the other two teams nearly on par with Bama. It’s early.
