Buried in the middle of this meaningless series against the Marlins, we get something that could potentially be one of the more important events of the second half of this season for the Pirates: Jeff Locke’s big league debut. Locke profiles as a Maholm-type with maybe a bit more upside (his minor league numbers are better than Maholm’s, though that obviously doesn’t have to mean much as their career arcs aren’t identical). I’m just happy that he’s had a strong enough year to earn some big league looks at the end of this season, to be honest, no matter how they go. Also, I’m happy he’s pitching instead of some of the other options the Pirates have here for spot starts.
The Marlins counter with Anibal Sanchez, who’s been roughed up a few times in his last 5-10 starts. Hopefully this won’t be as ugly as last night. First pitch is at 7:05.
