It’s a good thing Tennessee has Kerry Collins

The quarterback situation in Minnesota has not been good, to say the least, for several years. A year ago, the Vikings hoped, and failed, to get Brett Favre.

Instead, the Vikes went with Gus Frerotte and Tarvaris Jackson. Now Frerotte is gone, replaced by Sage Rosenfels, who will supposedly compete with Jackson for the job. But there’s a problem with that. The man the Vikes really want is Favre, who retired again and was subsequently released by the Jets.

Vikings officials are now reportedly going to Mississippi to visit the future Hall of Famer, which doesn’t do anything to display confidence in either T-Jack or Rosencopter.

If you’re wondering what this has to do with the Titans, it’s because Minnesota was mentioned in January and February as a possible home for Kerry Collins, whose contract was about to expire.

It would have been a pretty good situation for Collins — he’d have a very good offensive line and a star running back to hand off to. Fortunately for us, Collins has a similar, but better, situation in Tennessee, which is probably one of the reasons he re-signed to wear the two-tone blue.

But what if he had opted, for whatever reason, to sign with the Vikes instead?

Playing the “what if” game, if that actually did happen, what would that have meant for the Titans?

Without Collins, Vince Young would probably be the starter if the season started today. By September, though, Patrick Ramsey should be in a stronger position to compete with Vince. And I wouldn’t feel nearly as comfortable with either one as I do with Collins.

Collins has Jeff Fisher’s confidence, and the team’s.

Young and Ramsey seem to be in the same situation as the Vikings’ Jackson and Rosenfels — their head coach would rather have someone else to be their starting quarterback.

It’s a good thing that Tennessee, not Minnesota, has Collins. We don’t have to worry about whether or not the quarterback can get the job done. The Vikings and their fans can’t say the same.
