The countdown continues on today and for the 2nd straight day we feature a Wisconsin native on the roster. At least it's not a ridiculous number for the position this time around. It's also a player that's made a jersey number switch as he used to be No. 48.
Today, we're Jake Keefer to Badger Football kickoff – just 93 days away. Keefer may be a name you don't necessarily know but he came to the UW with a lot of promise and could be in line to become a force in the new 3-4 defense the Badgers will roll out in 2013. Why? Well, being 6'3" tall and weighing 253lbs. So, keeping an eye on this redshirt sophomore could be wise for the future of the Badgers program.
Story So Far:
– Keefer made 4 appearances in his first season in 2012, recording 2 tackles on the year.
– He made his debut against Purdue and recorded a tackle in the Big Ten championship game against Nebraska
– Keefer was the No. 1 ranked recruit in the state of Wisconsin in the class of 2011 by rivals and scout and was a 4-star prospect by both of those services.
History of No. 93:
Frederick Gage (QB, 1938-40): A Quarterback in the 90's for a number? You know you are in a different world. Gage had a decent career at the UW, but is perhaps best remembered as the radio voice of Badgers football for 35 years.
Chuck Smith (DL, 1998-2001): Smith was a starter on one of the better defensive lines the Badgers have ever had in 2001. Smith had 16 tackles, 3tfl's, and 2 sacks in that season, teaming up with the likes of Ben Herbert and Wendell Bryant.
Bill Ferarrio: O.k., in all fairness, he wore this number for all of one season before becoming the offensive lineman we all know and love, but its an interesting fact that you may not know.
