Yesterday we honored the 2nd of the retired numbers and perhaps the most tragic story in Badger football history as we profiled Allan Schafer. Today we keep things on the offensive side of the ball but move to the wide receiver ranks as we talk about another Wisconsin native – Jake Stengel.
Story So Far:
– Stengel contributed greatly on the special teams last season as a redshirt freshman, recovering a fumble in his debut game at UTEP.
– In total he's seen action in six games so far, making one tackle (at Nebraska).
– He's got the height to play the position and with a wide open race opposite of Jared Abbrederis who knows what could happen this fall, however expect him to contribute to special teams again this season.
History of No. 82 at Wisconsin:
Tony Simmons (WR, 1994-97): He managed to lead the team in receiving yards as a freshman in 1994 and finished his career with 1,991 yards (8th all-time) on 99 receptions. Simmons may have been the most explosive wide receiver since Al Toon graced the Badgers sideline until Brandon Williams came along. His career average of 20.1 yards per catch ranks him 1st all-time at the UW. He is second in career TD receptions with 23 (a number that could go lower this year as current Badger Jared Abbrederis has 16 TD's on his career so far).
