Fort Worth’s James Vick made a statement Saturday night at UFC Fight Night 65 following a picture-perfect guillotine submission of the much hyped Jake Matthews. The fight took place on the night’s undercard.
Early on it was Vick who appeared to be in for a rough fight as Matthews landed some hard left hooks and scored a thunderous takedown early on in the fight. However, Vick, like he has done time and time again, managed to weather the early storm and turned things around mid-round with a jumping double knee. Wheeling from the strike, Matthews looked to shoot in for a takedown but Vick latched on with an airtight guillotine that forced the tap with seconds to spare in the first round.
The win not only kept Vick’s record unblemished but also netted the Phalanx MMA trained fighter a cool $50,000 performance of the night bonus from the UFC.
