Back again with the week in review starting off in Springfield like we always do! The Falcons got back on track going 2-0 the same week that the team celebrated its 20th anniversary. First off was a trip to Portland (Lewiston) for a game against the Pirates. In the 4-3 shootout win the Falcons took an early lead when Cody Bass deflected a Blake Parlett point shot for his second of the season. After a Pirates goal, Spencer Machacek got his seventh goal from Michael Chaput and Dalton Smith. The Birds would allow two more goals before Cody Goloubef was able to tie it up. The game went to a shootout with Goloubef winning it in the fifth round. Mike McKenna made 31 saves in the victory, stopping four of five in the shootout.
Up next was a game against Providence. Andrew Joudrey opened the scoring when he tapped in the rebound of a Tim Erixon point shot. The Falcons allowed three straight goals before they scored early in the third. Spencer Machacek got on the scoreboard 36 seconds into the period when he crashed the net to make it 3-2. 12 minutes later Ryan Craig tipped in a Jonathan Marchessault shot to tie it at three. 30 seconds later, Tim Erixon gathered a loose puck and found Sean Collins who deflected the puck past the Bruins goalie. Andrew Joudrey finished the game with an empty net goal launching the puck from before his own blueline to ice the 5-3 win. Jeremy Smith made 22 saves in the victory including this highlight glove save.
Oscar Dansk-Erie Otters (OHL)

First some awards. With his 3-0 record last week that included two shutouts Oscar was named CHL VAUGHN Goaltender of the week for the second time this season. As for his week in Erie it started off with a game against Kingston. Oscar had his shutout streak snapped at the 13:35 of the first period ending his streak at 157:53 which is the third longest in franchise history. In the 6-3 victory Oscar had 26 saves for his 20th win of the season. To close out the week the Guelph Storm came to town in a matchup of the Midwest Division’s top two teams. In the 1-0 loss Oscar would make 18 saves.
Kerby Rychel-Guelph Storm (OHL)

Kerby was held scoreless for the first time in his tenure with the Storm snapping a eight game point streak(4-7-11) that started on November 30th with Windsor. Kerby wasn’t able to garner any points in the wins over Kitchener and Erie – only the second time this season Kerby was held scoreless in back to back games. In the Storm’s 6-1 win over Kingston, Kerby had his second three assist night of the season giving him 32 assists in 36 games after having 47 in 68 last year.
Josh Anderson-London Knights (OHL)
Season Stats 37GP 17-13-30 +12 50 PIM
Josh and the Knights earned a 1-2 record last week with Josh scoring his 17th goal of the season and first since December 7th (of course he did leave one game later for the World Juniors). In the game against Kitchener, Josh scored his third shorthanded goal of the season to make it 4-2. Josh was held scoreless in a 3-1 loss to Saginaw and in a 3-1 loss to Mississauga.
Nick Moutrey-Saginaw Spirit (OHL)

Nick opened the week with a game against London in which he picked up an assist. With the Spirit leading 1-0, Nick got the puck from a board and delivered the puck to Terry Trafford who passed to Justin Kea. Kea then scored his 16th of the season and the Spirit would go on to win the game 3-1. Nick was held scoreless in a 4-3 victory over Sudbury.
Peter Quenneville-Brandon Wheat Kings (WHL)

Peter and the Wheat Kings went 2-0 with Peter picking up his second four point night of the season. In a game against fellow Jackets prospect Dillon Heatherington and the Broncos, Peter scored the Kings first goal when they were trailing 2-0. He took a pass from Tim McGauley and banged the puck home to make it 2-1. After another Broncos goal Peter picked up an assist when he sent a cross crease pass to Richard Nejezchleb who fired a shot from along the goalline. In the third Peter got another assist on Ryan Pilon’s goal but it’s hard to tell what exactly happened from the highlights. Based on the scoresheet I’m guessing Peter got the puck to Ryan Pulock whose shot was stopped before Pilon picked up the rebound to make it 5-4 Wheaties. 1:08 later Peter earned his third assist on McGauley’s 12th goal of the season on the power play. Peter was named first star in the 6-5 victory.
The next night it was off to Saskatoon for a game against the Blades. Peter picked up an assist on the Wheat Kings opening goal when Peter was part of a three on one with Tim McGauley and Nejezchleb who finished to make it 1-0. Brandon would win the game 4-3.
Oliver Bjorkstrand-Portland Winterhawks (WHL)

Oliver and the Hawks went 2-0 last week with Oliver picking up three points which allowed Oliver to set a new career high in points. Oliver picked up a goal and an assist in a 8-2 win over Calgary tying his career high from last season in 22 less games. With the Hawks leading 2-0 Oliver skated in and snapped a shot from the slot to make it 3-0 Hawks. Oliver picked up his assist on a beautiful drop pass to Chase De Leo who passed it to Taylor Leier to make it 8-2. Sunday afternoon brought a game against Spokane, (in which the Hawks seemed to want to blind their fans by opening the curtains). In the 5-0 win, Oliver scored his 30th to make it 5-0 when he scored on a one timer from Taylor Leier. Oliver is the fifth 30 goal scorer in the WHL which includes undrafted 42 goal scorer Mitch Holmberg.
Martin Ouellette-Maine Black Bears (Hockey East)

Martin and the Black Bears opened the week against the UMass-Lowell RiverHawks. In the 1-1 tie Martin set a career high 39 saves being named fist star. Up next was a game against the mighty Boston College and Martin had a rough game – being pulled 5:56 into the second after stopping 12 of 16 in what ended in a 7-2 loss that Martin took.
Seth Ambroz, Mike Reilly-Minnesota Golden Gophers (Big 10)

Seth and Mike opened the week by finishing up a series against Penn State on Monday. Mike picked up an assist on Travis Boyd’s sixth goal of the season when he passed to Hudson Fasching who sent a cross rink pass to Boyd to make it it 1-0 in a 5-2 victory.
Up next was a series against Ohio State.Oon Friday the teams played outside in TCF Bank Stadium in front of 45,021 setting a new record for a hockey game in Minnesota. Mike and Seth were held scoreless in a 1-0 win over OSU. The game was part of Hockey Day in Minnesota and Fox Sports North ran a feature on Mike and his hockey playing family which includes his twin brothers who also play on the Gophers and older sister Shannon who played hockey at OSU.
In the rematch, the Gophers picked up a 4-2 victory with Mike and Seth combining for three points. The Gophers were trailing 2-0 when the Gophers worked a nice tic tac toe play with Mike getting it to Sam Warning who put the puck and himself into the net to make it 2-1. In the second period, Mike helped Warning finish the Gophers first natural hat trick since October 2010 when Warning deposited the rebound of Mike’s shot. Seth got into the act when he stole the puck from Tanner Fritz and scored his team leading (hat trick gave Warning 10 also) 10th of the season to make it 4-2. Next week the Gophers will host the inaugural North Star College Cup.
TJ Tynan-Notre Dame Fighting Irish (Hockey East)
Season Stats 23GP 5-20-25 +7 16PIM
TJ continues to rise up the Irish’s all-time scoring list by picking up two more points last week. This moves him past Bill Rothstein and he only needs five more points to move into a tie for 14th place. TJ’s two assists came on goals four and six of the Irish’s 6-3 victory. TJ worked a give and go with Sam Herr on the game winner for goal number 4 and TJ would also assist on Herr’s second goal of the game.
Quickly Joonas Korpisalo would make it into the Lynx when starter Ville Kolppanen allowed two goals on six shots lasting only 3:27. Joonas finished the game and made 34 saves allowing three goals including one to OSU alum Corey Elkins in the Lynx’s 5-1 loss to HIFK.
Alexander Wennberg-Frolunda Indians (SHL)
Season Stats 36GP 14-4-18(2nd among SHL rookies) -3 8PIM
In two games last week the Indians went 1-0-0-1 last week. In the week’s opening game against Linkopings, a 4-3 shootout loss, Alexander was held scoreless. In the team’s next game against Orebro Alexander scored his 14th goal of the season to open the scoring of a 3-1 victory.
Daniel Zaar-Rogle BK (Allsvenskan)
Season Stats 39GP 12-14-26 +2 22
Daniel was held scoreless in a 4-1 loss to Malmo but notched a goal and an assist and was named second star in a 4-2 win over Asploven. In the second period with Rogle trailing 2-1, Daniel manned the point on the power play. He passed back and forth with Dman Eric Martinsson before Daniel fired a missle off a one timer to make it 2-2. In the third period off a faceoff, Daniel took a pass from Niklas Hansson and then fired off a shot that was be tipped in front by Christopher Liljewall to make it 3-2.
Markus Soberg-Frolunda J20 (J20 SuperElit Top 10)
Season Stats 5GP 2-2-4 +4 0PIM
Markus and the Little Indians went 2-0 last week continuing their hot start. Markus also continued his point streak with an assist in a 4-0 win over Brynas. Markus picked up another assist in a 6-3 win over Leksands. The J20 Indians are currently 5-0 and lead the league in scoring with 20 goals.
