Greetings all! Back again with the week in review. It seems like a light week in prospect land but anyhoo away we go!
Starting off in Springfield as we usually do – the Falcons recent struggles continue as the team went 0-2. Starting off in a game against Worchester – after allowing the Sharks a 2-0 lead the Falcons worked a three on two with Michael Chaput firing on net and Sean Collins putting in the rebound for his eighth goal of the season. After another Sharks goal and a Dalton Smith fight, the Energizer Bunny Alex Aleardi skated in and found Lukas Sedlak who scored his seventh of the season to make it 3-2. The Falcons would allow two late second period goals to make it 5-2(can’t get direct link to highlights but the game date was 1/31 if you’re searching for them) with Mike McKenna making 35 saves in the loss.
Up next was a game against Bridgeport – a game the Falcons lost 3-0 marking their second shutout loss in the month. Jeremy Smith had 20 saves in the loss. To add insult to injury, Sean Collins left the game after a check to the head from Sound Tigers defenseman Mike Cantin which earned him a match penalty and a (later announced) four game suspension.
Oscar Dansk-Erie Otters (OHL)
Season Stats 30GP 22-6-1 2.15GAA .919Sv% 6SO
Oscar played in two of the Otters’ three games last week missing out on a blowout win over Niagara. Oscar played in the Otters two games against Owen Sound and in the 4-3 win Oscar made 24 saves marking his 22nd win of the season (after winning only 11 last season). After getting the night off against Niagara, Oscar was back in the Otters crease in a 2-1 loss to Owen Sound with Oscar making 23 saves.
Kerby Rychel-Guelph Storm (OHL)
Season Stats 41GP 22-38-60 +27 23PIM
Kerby and the Storm opened the week by adding to their eight game winning streak. Kerby picked up his third three point game in four games. Kerby’s first point came late in the second period when he took a pass from Robby Fabbri, quickly passed the puck back allowing Fabbri to get it to Zach Mitchell in front to make it 4-0 Guelph. After a Sting goal, Kerby took a pass from Fabbri at the doorstep in front of a wide open net and tapped the biscuit into the basket to make it 5-1. Late in the third, Kerby worked a give and go with Fabbri down low for his third point of the game to make it 6-1, Kerby was named first star in the win. The Storm’s next game was against Kerby’s old team, the Windsor Spitfires. Kerby was held without a point in the 3-1 loss which also snapped Guelph’s nine game winning streak.
Josh Anderson-London Knights (OHL)
Season Stats 42GP 19-15-34 +16 68PIM
Since naming Captains last week, the Knights have been rolling along going 3-0 last week with one victory coming in the form of a blowout and the other two being one goal affairs. Josh was held scoreless in the first two games – wins over North Bay and Sudbury. In the 5-4 win over Barrie, Josh picked up an assist on Max Domi’s goal. Anderson checked the Barrie puck carrier allowing Chris Tierney to get the puck to Domi who made it 5-1 Knights. In the win over Barrie, Josh (6’3″ 212) got in a heavyweight bout with top NHL draft prospect Colts Dman Aaron Ekblad (6’4″ 217) which Josh won on points.
Gianluca Curcuruto-Plymouth Whalers (OHL)
Season Stats 40GP 4-14-18 -12 12PIM
Gianluca added to his point streak last week as the Whalers went 1-1 last week. Gianluca picked up an assist on Zach Lorentz’s goal when he got the puck from the Whaler’s goaltender and found Lorentz who was off to the races to make it 2-2. The Whalers would fall 3-2 – allowing a late power play goal in a brawl filled game. Up next was a game against Belleville. “The Chin” would pick up an assist on Carter Sandlak’s goal when he fired a blast that Sandlak deflected for his 21st of the season. The Whalers went on to win the game 4-3.
Nick Moutrey-Saginaw Spirit (OHL)
Season Stats 51GP 12-18-30 +6 60PIM
Nick and Spirit were busy last week with three games and Nick picked up points in two of them. First up in a 6-3 loss to Sault Ste Marie, with Saginaw trailing 5-1, Nick skated the puck up and sent a pass to a diving Dylan Sadowy to make it 5-2. Up next in a blowout win over Belleville, Nick picked up two assists for his fifth multi point game of the season. Nick’s first assist came when he was the trailer on a play and took a drop pass, and shot allowing Justin Sefton to catch the rebound and fire into the empty net to make it 4-0. Nick’s second assist came on the extra point goal and it looked a lot like his first one – he again took a drop pass and fired a shot that Jesse Graham would collect and go on to score to give him the hat trick in the 7-0 win. (AUTHOR WARNING no play by play in the highlights just bad music don’t say I didn’t warn you)
Peter Quenneville-Brandon Wheat Kings (WHL)
Season Stats 34GP 16-24-40 -8 6PIM
Peter and the Wheat Kings were off on a four game road trip through Alberta and Saskatchewan. Starting off in Edmonton, Peter scored late in a 4-2 loss to the Oil Kings. In the third with the Wheaties trailing 4-1, Ryan Pulock fired a shot that the Oil Kings goalie would get a piece of with the rebound going to Peter who scored his 15th.
The next night it was off to Red Deer for a game against the Rebels with Peter earning his 10th multi point game of the season. Peter picked up an assist on Ryan Pulock’s third period goal that tied the game at two. Late in the third with the Kings trailing 3-2, Ryan Pilon found Peter in the slot where he was able to slide it past the Rebels goalie to tie it at three with a little under two minutes remaining. Peter shot first in the shootout but missed.
Calgary was the team’s next stop with Peter adding to his point streak with another assist. The Kings were trailing 3-1 when a Kings Dman would interrupt the Hitmen’s rush and get the puck to Peter who found Tim McGauley. He would pass it to Eric Roy who score to make it 3-2. The Kings would ultimately fall by a score of 7-4 (for some reason the sound and highlights don sync up). To close out the week it was off to Saskatoon. In the 4-1 win Peter garnered another assist. With the Kings leading 3-1, Peter – while absorbing a check – passed to Tim McGauley who shot and allowed Jesse Gabrielle to tap it past the Blades goalie.
Oliver Bjorkstrand-Portland Winterhawks (WHL)
Season Stats 50GP 37-39-76 +26 22PIM
Oliver and the Hawks just keep rolling along going 4-0 last week which pushes the team’s winning streak to 10 in a row. The week started against Everett in what was the third meeting in a row between the Silvertips and the Winterhawks. Oliver picked up an assist when he won a board battle and found Chase De Leo in front to make it 4-0. Early in the second period, with the Hawks on the power play, Oliver fired a shot that led to a scrum in front with the loose puck going to Oliver. He was able to fire a shot for his 34th of the season. The Hawks would go on to win the game 8-1.
In the three games against the Tips Oliver scored four goals and added two assists. Up next was another division game against Spokane with the Hawks picking up another blow out win. In the 6-0 victory, Oliver added to his career high with two goals. Oliver worked a give and go with Taylor Leier and then finished it with a wrist shot from the circle. Four minutes later Oliver and Taylor teamed up again with Leier sending a cross rink pas to Oliver who completed a drop pass to Derrick Pouliot. Pouliot woud then find Oliver in front for his second of the game. Oliver was named second star in the 6-0 victory.
To close out the week it was a rivalry game against the Seattle Thunderbirds. In the 3-0 Hawks win Oliver picked up two more points with a goal and an assist. Oliver’s assist came on the opening goal with the Hawks on the power play when either Oliver shot it and Nic Petan picked up the rebound or Oliver passed it to Petan – it’s hard to tell from the highlights. After a shorthanded goal, Oliver struck on the power play. Again, I can’t tell if it was off a rebound or a pass but Oliver fired a shot from the slot to make it 3-0 Hawks.
Dillon Heatherington-Swift Current (WHL)
Season Stats 52GP 5-26-31 +19 49PIM
It was a light week for the Broncos as they only played two games. Starting off against Medicine Hat, with the Broncos trailing 2-1, the puck came out of a scrum in front with a Tigers player trying to clear it along the boards. The puck got straight to Dillon who fired a blast to make it 2-2. In the third Dillon corralled the puck and delivered it to Julius Honka who passed it to Graham Black who showed patience before firing a shot to make it 3-2. Dillon was named second star in the 4-3 victory. Dillon was held pointless in a 6-2 loss to Prince George.
Mike Reilly-Minnesota Golden Gophers (Big Ten)
Season Stats 26GP 8-14-22 +18 12PIM
Mike and the Gophers were off to East Lansing to take on Sparty. First on Friday night the Gophers spotted the Spartans a 2-0 lead before they were able to strike. With the Gophers on the power play Mike sent a pass to Travis Boyd whose shot was stopped but freshman Hudson Fasching was able to deposit the rebound to make it 2-1. In the national standings the game would go as a 2-2 tie but the Gophers ultimately lost in a shootout. In the rematch on Saturday, the Gophers picked up a 1-0 victory with Mike picking up an assist on the goal that was much like his assist on Friday except Kyle Rau would score the goal in the first. In off-ice antics, despite being held pointless Seth was the focus of a feature in the team’s “Pride on Ice” web series focusing on his goal celebrations.
TJ Tynan-Notre Dame Fighting Irish (Hockey East)
Season Stats 27GP 6-21-27 +6 20PIM
TJ earned a point in each of the team’s two losses to New Hampshire. First on Friday night, TJ picked up an assist on Bryan Rust’s shorthanded goal which tied the game at 2 but sadly the game ended 4-2. In the rematch, TJ scored his 6th goal of the season in the second when he potted the rebound of a Vincent Hinostroza shot to tie it at two. The game ended with the Irish falling by a score of 5-2.
Since were shifting over to Europe, Joonas Korpisalo finally got a start for Ilves and picked up not only his first Liiga win but his first career shutout in a 5-0 win over JYP. The young goal tender made 27 saves including 11 in the third period.
Alexander Wennberg-Frolunda (SHL)
Season Stats 42GP 16-4-20 -5 8PIM
Alexander was held scoreless in a win over HV71. Wennberg scored his SHL rookie leading 16th goal of the season in 5-3 win over Linkopings. In the third with the Indians leading 4-3, Alexander set a screen and deflected in a Erik Gustaffson point shot to make it 5-3. Alexander would be held scoreless in a 2-1 win over Vaxjo to close out the week.
Anton Forsberg-MODO (SHL)
Season Stats 20GP 11-6-3 2.49GAA .919Sv% 1SO
After sitting for five straight games Anton finally got back into the MODO crease and boy would he make the best of it. In a 1-0 win over Leksands, Anton made 26 saves for his first career Elitserien shutout. Up next was a game against HV71. Anton earned the start and had 36 saves in a 5-1 victory.
Daniel Zaar-Rogle (Allsvenskan)
Season Stats 42GP 13-16-29 E 22PIM
Daniel picked up a point in each of Rogle’s three games last week earning a total of one goal and two assists. Starting off against Sodertalje SK, Daniel picked up an assist on Dennis Everberg’s game winning goal just 1:24 after SSK would tie it (for some reason Rogle didn’t think it needed to be in the game highlights). Up next in a game against Karlskrona, with Rogle leading 2-1, Daniel took a shot, curled around the net, and took a pass from Jakob Johannson who skated to the circle and fired a laser to make it 3-1. It would be the game winner in the 4-2 victory. To close out the week in a 5-3 loss to Troja Ljungby, in the second period with Rogle trailing 2-1 Daniel sent a cross rink pass to Jakob Johansson who faced an empty net to shoot into to tie the game at 2.
There you have it folks – another week in the world of CBJ prospects! As for next week we’ll have the final update from the SHL for a few weeks as they’ll be taking a break for the Olympics and in a quirk of the schedule we’ll have a lot of CBJ prospect matchups including both of the Otters games. Oscar will face a future teammate and TJ and the Irish will welcome another NCAA senior prospect. Also on the horizon, the Jackets have to make a decision on Martin Ouellette as the Black Bears return to action after a week off traveling to South Bend.
