There’s a post on MLB Trade Rumors saying that the Pirates have shown interest in Jason Giambi, but MLBTR appears to be down right now and I can’t find the original source. I’d suspect it’s Ken Rosenthal, but I’m not positive. UPDATE: It was speculation by Buster Olney. So Rosenthal says several teams are interested in Giambi, but hasn’t named them while Olney is guessing that the Pirates would be a good fit. Which means that there’s no concrete evidence that the Pirates are interested in Giambi right now, though it would make some sense if they were.
So … Giambi? He’s having a pretty strong year, he’s a left-handed power bat that would hit better than Lyle Overbay and he could be platooned/replaced defensively by Steve Pearce. Honestly, he’s kind of a good fit for the Pirates and PNC Park and while his defense makes me a bit nervous, I think he might be the sort of player Neal Huntington could grab on the cheap that would help team without sacrificing much.
