Jason Kidd turned two of the worst possible months a new coach could go through into one of the best possible months a new coach could go through, and he's being rewarded for his efforts |
After the Nets started 2014 on a 10-win, one-loss roll, turning their season completely around, it felt like a formality that the coach behind the reversal–Jason Kidd–would receive the East's Coach of the Month award, which is basically rewarded to the coach of the best or most surprising team of any month in either conference. Today, that assumption became the truth, as Kidd reportedly will receive the award, according to ESPNNewYork.com.
The beginning of the season, which saw the Nets sit at 10-21 at the end of 2013, was equal parts eventful and unsuccessful for Brooklyn and Kidd. Whether it was CupGate, the demotion of Lawrence Frank, or the 2-9 stretch to end December, the start of the 2013-14 season was a bad one for all parties involved with the Nets, and noone was happier to see the early portion of it to end than Jason Kidd.
Even though Brooklyn is riding a three-game losing streak–after losses to the Raptors, Thunder, and Pacers (with the last one in February)–the team is in a much better place right now than it was over a month ago. That's certainly due to some improved play on the court but also due to better coaching from Kidd, who is quickly learning on the job how to be a NBA coach after a long and distinguished career as a player. Well-deserved.
