With eight seconds left in a big comeback against the Lakers, Brooklyn Nets head coach Jason Kidd pulled Tyshawn Taylor. They were down two, with no time outs left.
Fortunately, serendipity intervened when Taylor clumsily bumped into Kidd, who was holding a drink. The drink spilled, and Kidd had a chance to talk to his team while the towel boys mopped up the mess.
But the replay showed there was something behind the serendipity. Kidd clearly mouths the words “hit me” to Taylor, and Taylor obliges. Kidd, who was out of time outs, just bought one with he old spilled drink trick.
It was ultimately meaningless. The Nets lost to the Lakers, dropping them to 4-11 on the season. But that’s not really the point. The point is Kidd gamed the system, found a way to get a real coach to talk to the guys, and sneak in an extra time out. Part of the move is brilliant… part of it is BS. I’m betting the league has something to say about it when all is said and done.
