The Cardinals have nominated Jason Motte for the Roberto Clemente Award.

The Roberto Clemente Award is given annually to the Major League Baseball (MLB) player who “best exemplifies the game of baseball, sportsmanship, community involvement and the individual’s contribution to his team”, as voted on by baseball fans and members of the media. It is named for Hall of Fame outfielder Roberto Clemente. Originally known as the Commissioner’s Award, it has been presented by the MLB since 1971.

Mr. Motte spent the 2013 the disabled list.

When we look back on the career of Jason Motte, that might end up being his most valuable season.

He created The Jason Motte Foundation with the intention to ‘strike out cancer’ in 2010. And his work has extended beyond St. Louis with a partnership with other pros and the MLB Players Association.

The 2013 winner was Carlos Beltran, then of the St. Louis Cardinals. Let’s hope it’s back to back wins for the Birds.
