The Panthers profered some great news ahead of tonight’s game. Jayce Hawryluk has signed an entry level contract with the team.
Hawryluk is another prospect coming up the pipeline that is exciting those monitoring Panthers draftees. The 5’10, 187lbs forward plays a gritty game with some scoring touch. If that sounds vaguely like Brendan Gallagher, that’s not an accident. Hawryluk is a big fan of Gallagher, and models his game after the Canadiens forward.
The comparison is very apt so far. Gallagher had more of an offensive explosion than Hawryluk did, and got to play at the U20 World Junior Championships. However, Hawryluk has had a steady incline year after year in his WHL production. I would imagine we will continue to see the same parallel progression, with Hawryluk next making a stop in Portland for a little seasoning.
However, Hawryluk probably won’t see time at the pro level in 2015-16. That’s for good reason, his Brandon Wheat Kings are looking to vie for the WHL Championship, and a trip to the Memorial Cup tournament in Red Deer, Alberta. Its the highest honor at the Junior level, and a successful run would be an incredible experience for Hawryluk.
Also fun: the fact that he signed with the Panthers when they too are in the province of Manitoba, home of the Wheat Kings.
