Alright, pop quiz. How much would you pay for a baseball glove that never officially caught a home run?
Well, if that glove happens to be the same one Jeffrey Maier used to deflect a Derek Jeter “home run” into the stands during the 1996 American League Championship Series between the New York Yankees and Baltimore Orioles…the answer is $22,705.
According to Heritage Auctions, the glove, which was announced as being up for sale Monday, was bought by an anonymous collector Saturday night. Why someone would pay that much for a 12-year-old’s mitt is beyond me, but if you believe it was the “spark that started the modern Yankees dynasty”, then, yeah, I kinda get it.
But I’ll tell you who didn’t buy it…and his name rhymes with Pony Parasco.
“Even to this day, almost 20 years after the fact, this glove still continues to elicit smiles from Yankees fans and curses from Orioles fans,” said Heritage’s Director of Sports Auctions Chris Ivy. “It’s an innocuous enough little black leather Mizuno glove but it still inspires big emotions and commanded a big-time auction price.”
Oh, and in case you’re curious what $22,705 might be able to buy you…I’ll tell you. Literally $22,705 worth of anything else.
Now, does anyone want to buy the bat that I never used to break Barry Bonds’ single-season home run record? If so, you know where to find me.
